It's time for some animal advocacy at school!

Saigon - Australia's last circus elephant - is still being carted around in a truck with the Perry Bros circus, despite the fact she's even too old to perform. She spends most of her time confined in a small barren enclosure surrounded by an electric fence. We need you and your friends to help give her a better life.

Please download and print out a few copies of the 'Free Saigon' petition and take them to school/uni for all your friends and classmates to sign.

Give Coles & Woolies Your 2 Cents!

Coles and Woolies are the two biggest financial supporters of factory farming in Australia. That means they're also in the best position to end it - and ensure that animals are no longer subjected to painful mutilations, severe confinement and overcrowding, chronic boredom and other routine abuses in factory farms. And the only people who can convince them to use that power to help animals are their customers.

So next time you're near the supermarket, ask for a customer feedback form at the service desk, fill it in, and let your supermarket know how upset it makes you to see factory-farmed products on their shelves. Simple!

And if you have a little time to burn, then grab a trolley sign and stroll around the supermarket for an hour or so while you're there... ;-)

We are being presented with a unique opportunity tonight to change the world, and we need your help doing it! As you know, 60 Minutes will be screening an expose this Sunday night at 6.30pm on Channel Nine (Australia wide), and we need your help getting Australia to tune in.

Please organise for at least one friend to watch 60 Minutes with you. If we all did this, twice as many Australians will catch a glimpse of the suffering that factory farmers have been hiding from us for years. And that's twice as many people who can help save these smart, sensitive animals. Wouldn't that just be grand? This could be one of the most important things you can do for animals this year, while we have the opportunity.

Thanks to 60 Minutes, Australia's shameful treatment of animals on factory farms will be shown to the nation for approximately 15 minutes - longer than any ad time we could ever buy!

Speak Up for Sheep!

This Friday (6th November) the Australian government will decide whether to continue to allow sheep to be slaughtered without stunning in Australia.

Most sheep in Aus are stunned before slaughter, but a few slaughterhouses have already been given permits to kill without stunning. Even one permit would be too many, so to permit even more slaughterhouses to kill without stunning would be a huge step backwards in animal welfare standards in Australia. The fact that slaughtering animals whilst fully conscious causes more suffering is a no brainer. And yet, we have reason to believe that the Aust govt is going to go against the advice of their own scientific reports and permit this cruel practice to continue!

There are reports in both The Age and the Sydney Morning Herald today (2nd November) about the fact that HRH Princess Alia of Jordan has written to Prime Minister Rudd and appealed to him to intervene to ensure Australia does not allow non-stun slaughter. In an opinion piece, also in both papers, the Princess explains that ethical treatment of animals is a key tenet of Islamic teachings and stunning of animals before slaughter is accepted. The Princess Alia has also emphasised that permitting non-stun slaughter in Australia not only is a step backwards for our own protection laws, but it hinders efforts to improve standards in the Middle East.

Please let the decision makers know that you strongly oppose non-stun killing of animals and ask them to completely ban the practice in Australia.

Please personalise your letter and put any of the following points that you may wish to use in your own words:

It is shocking to learn that killing animals without pre-stunning is still allowed in certain abattoirs in Australia. All animals should be stunned unconscious before having their throats cut.
That a leading figure in the Middle East has made it clear that if Australia allows non-stunned slaughter it will negate efforts to have stunning broadly accepted in the Middle East.
Australia should lead the world in the ethical treatment of animals and our political leaders must ban this practice immediately.
Virtually all of our export markets already accept meat that has come from animals that have been stunned during slaughter, so there is no excuse to continue allowing this unacceptable non-stun slaughter in Australia.

Dogs & cats don't belong on shop shelves!

More than 60,000 unwanted dogs and cats are put down in New South Wales alone every year. Others are dumped in national parks and left to fend for themselves.

Many of these pets are bought in an impulse in pet shops and on markets that display cute young animals with the sole purpose of making a profit. These traders don't care how the animals are bred or what happens to them afterwards. And the people who buy them often don't realise the costs or responsibilities involved.

Coming Thursday, 22 October, a vote on the Animals (Regulations of Sale) Bill is expected in the NSW Lower House. This Bill is introduced by independent Member of Parliament and Lord Mayor of the City of Sydney Clover Moore and will ban the sale of dogs and cats in shops and markets in New South Wales. The Bill will significantly reduce the overpopulation of pets and save thousands of innocent animals from death row.

It is shocking that in a pet loving country more than 60,000 healthy dogs and cats are killed in NSW alone every year.
A major cause of this surplus of animals is the impulse buying in pet shops and markets by people that haven't thought of the responsibilities and costs that owning a pet involves.
These shops sell animals for the sole purpose to make a profit. They don't inform their customers of the responsibilities causing many families the grieve of having to say goodbye to their beloved pet simply because they can't take care of it.
Many abandoned dogs and cats are now roaming in our national parks, forming a threat to our native species.
The NSW government has the opportunity to prevent thousands of homeless animals from being killed each year and make a strong statement about the importance of responsible pet ownership.

Bake Vegan Cupcakes!

We call it culinary activism. Others just call it a good excuse to eat cake. Whatever you call it, baking vegan cupcakes has got to be the most deliciously cunning way to win friends and speak up for cows and chickens at the same time!

Here's what you do:

Print off this recipe for heavenly egg and dairy-free cupcakes from WhyVeg.com.
Commandeer the kitchen for an hour or so as you whip up a storm!
Decorate your cupcakes however you like (try the 'contented cow': white/brown cow patterns, or 'cheery chicks': yellow iced tops with vegan choc-chip eyes and a triangle wafer for a beak).
Serve to all your non-vegan friends.
Remind them that the reason the delectable cupcakes they are eating are cruelty-free is because they do not support the slaughter of 1 million week-old dairy calves, or contribute to the deaths of 'useless' male chicks who are ground up alive for the egg industry.

Oh, and don't forget to bake some extra for yourself as well! And make sure you post pics of your creations to your profile for everyone to drool over!
