Sam Simon, Simpsons, Benjy, bulls
Well my heart beamed out a giant rainbow like a little care bear when I read this story. Benjy is a bull who likes bulls. And sadly, Farmer Joe don't want none unless you gunna knock up some cows hun. So poor Benjy was going to get slaughtered. Killed for being gay. That's rough.
BUT Gay UK magazine and Animal Rights Action Network (ARAN) started a campaign to save Benjy from slaughter and give him a safe and happy life at Hillside Animal Sanctuary. You can check out their Crowdfunding campaign here.
Sam Simon, Simpsons co-creator, who you might remember from previous awesomeness such as buying zoos and freeing all the animals and saving hundreds of chinchillas from a fur farm, heard about Benjy and jumped at the chance to help! Simon put up the funds needed to give Benjy a home for life :)

A long-time vegan, Simon said he was glad that Benjy's future was now "a sanctuary rather than a sandwich". Wouldn't it be great if all animals got to look forward to a life of freedom and happiness, rather than being someone's sandwich. But for most bulls, (gay, straight or otherwise), that's sadly not the case. They are born for one reason and one reason only -- their meat.
The good news is, no Benjy's have to die for your sandwich if you simply make the choice to have a no-bull sandwich today, and every other day. To get you started here's a tonne of delicious meat-free sandwich recipes :)

Sam Simon, The Simpsons, pet overpopulation, celebrity, vegetarian, vegan
Late last year, 58 year old Sam Simon, co-creator of ‘The Simpsons’, was diagnosed with terminal cancer. This man, along with making me laugh night after night with everyone’s favourite cartoon family, has been doing amazing things for animals all his life.

He became a vegetarian at the age of 19 and vegan in 2005. In 2002 he founded “the grandest dog shelter in the country” complete with waterfalls and manicured lawns. Simon invests millions of dollars in this rescue centre and says that it is money “well spent just for the pleasure it gives me.”
It is so sad to hear that this beautiful man is terminally ill. But his legacy will live forever. He has decided to kick his charity work into high gear and give his millions away to those in need.
When he learned of his diagnosis, Simon says he had a “fun idea.” He bought up a bunch of zoos and circuses just so that he could free the animals within them. He says he just wanted to “see animals walk in grass for the first time.” How amazing is that?
Simon has big plans for where he wants to see the rest of his money go, including a number of animal charities. (There’s a rough breakdown here.)
On behalf of the animals, thank you Sam for helping to make the world a kinder place.
What would you do for animals if you were a millionaire?
