What to Eat!

Without a doubt, this is our favourite subject of all time. After all, we LOVE to eat! The best part about being veg is not just the HUGE of variety of great tasting food, but knowing that it won’t harm a single animal on its way to your plate.

Those of us brought up by our parents to eat animals might find it difficult to imagine enjoying a dinner of ‘meat and three veg’ minus the meat. But the truth is, vegetarians eat much the same things as meat eaters—pizza, burgers, burritos, lasagne—only with veggie ingredients in place of the dead body parts.

In with the New!

Eating vegetarian food is not about missing out—it’s simply about substituting the icky animal products for healthier vegetarian alternatives. That means (if you want), as a vegetarian or vegan you can still eat things like mince meat, burger patties, sausages and schnitzel—even bacon! We’re not kidding. Most supermarkets stock a tonne of mock meats and other specialty veggie foods. Check out our guide to meat substitutes for the low-down on turning meaty-meals into veggie delights!

Yes! Many people go veg because it’s healthier. Eating a variety of vegetarian foods (including fruits, vegetables, beans, grains, nuts and seeds) will give you all the energy and nutrients you need, including ample protein and iron. Want proof? Well it’s a fact that some of the world’s fastest athletes and buffest body-builders are 100% veg! Click here for more information on vegetarian nutrition.

Not sure where to start? Give these a try: spaghetti (with veggie mince), bean burritos, veggie tacos, veggie stir-frys with cashews and tofu, Lebanese felafel kebabs and veggie burgers. Check out our fave recipes for more ideas.

Just as you can be an unhealthy meat-eater, you can be an unhealthy vegetarian. Follow these common-sense tips to ensure you get started on the right foot:

Junk Food is Still Junk Food.

Just because it’s made from a plant, doesn’t mean it’s good for you. If all you decide to eat is hot chips and soft drinks, you won’t be giving your body the nutrients and energy it needs to stay healthy.

Don’t Limit Your Options.

Most people find that switching to a veg diet opens up whole new worlds of flavours and cuisines. Eat different foods, and be adventurous! Try some new dishes, like vegetarian sushi, Thai tofu curries, or Indian dahl. Your tastebuds (and your body) will thank you for it!

Don’t Give Up!

Cutting out the meat can seem like a big thing at first, particularly if you’re the first among your friends or family to make the switch. Eventually it becomes second nature. But along the way, don’t be too concerned with ‘being perfect’ or not making ‘mistakes’. Your choice to go veg is a powerful vote against animal cruelty, and every little step you can make helps animals!
