Vegans and supplements - it's all in the meat

I recently read this on the "friendly and pragmatic vegans and vegetarians" facebook page (1):

"My omni partner tries to say that obviously we're not meant to be vegan if we can't get all the B12 that we need. (Other than him doing the teeth argument, the hunter argument and the mmm bacon things).

BUT B vitamins are water soluble, so all diets can lack in all B vitamins due to the way that they are cooked, and this is why many foods are fortified with B vitamins, not just B12."  (Reginald Moran)

Exactly. And this is spot on.

Meat eaters also eat supplements all the time, whether they take pills, eat enriched food like milk or not. It's just that the supplements were literally pumped into the animals that were raised and killed for their meat. B12 and iron are commonly added to these animals via injections so that the meat is healthy enough.

Salt, milk, tap water are commonly fortified and most people don't question it and find it normal and a welcome, healthy gesture.

As vegans in the early 2000's, most of us have to take B12 supplements, and maybe Omega 3 supplements because our food isn't often enriched in it. The more vegans in the population and the more vegan food can be adequately enriched THE SAME WAY meat is enriched here and now - minus the cruelty to animals.

For all French speakers, I cannot recommend enough this article by David Olivier: Les animaux-emballages

For everyone else, I will try to find the time to translate it (or would be grateful if someone else did!)
