I'm saddened to read the breaking news story surrounding the death of a horse after running the Melbourne Cup this afternoon. These poor horses are put through so much. Not to mention being whipped while running the race exhausted. The poor horse collapsed and died after the race. I think it's disgusting and needs to STOP NOW!!!!!

I'd like to say how sad I feel this afternoon about the news of one horse dying after the race and a second horse badly injured in the Melbourne Cup.

I hate horse racing for this reason.  Horses are forced by the whip to run ever faster and too many jockeys/owners - I'm not sure which it is - are too keen to get their hands on the prize money and the horse's care comes second, I'm afraid.

In the case of the horse who died, apparently he started to fall behind quite early on in the race and surely that would have the time for the jockey to ease off and follow his lead, not to try and force him ever onwards to the end!

Sometimes there seems to be nothing but cruelty to animals everywhere you look, doesn't there.

The perfect example why everyone should boycott the Melbourne Cup (and horse racing in general).

How can people justify this type of treatment of animals for their own pleasure?

You can bet the majority of people will still find justification for this "sport" though, just so they have an excuse to get dressed up and drink alcohol all day. People are so self absorbed and couldn't care less about something that doesn't disturb them.

I honestly cannot fathom why an earth people would still want to support this event.

Sadly, both horses have died and it is something that needed never happen. And other horses will now die following the event, those deemed "losers". It is just horrrific.

How many more horses must die before this cruel "sport" is put an end to?
