A French abattoir is under investigation after horrifying footage showed cattle having their throats slit while conscious, pigs being gassed in a cage and a horse being beaten with an electric prod.
Undercover video taken in the slaughterhouse, in the southern town of Ales, shows animals appearing to recover from the effects of stun guns - only to be left to bleed to death.
It also shows pigs crammed into a cage being lowered, writhing and squealing, into a pit to be gassed with carbon dioxide and a terrified horse shying away from a stall and being beaten with an electric baton.
