Can you help us save “Squirrel”, left for dead for 3 days with a broken pelvis. Squirrel’s current vet bill is sitting at $730, she has spinal damage and is unable to express her bladder on her own and will most likely require surgery on monday which could cost thousands more. PLEASE SHARE WE ONLY HAVE TILL TOMORROW. gofundme.com/savesquirrel
We were incredibly saddened to receive a call on Friday from the RSPCA to let us know that a kitten we had adopted out earlier in the year had been rushed by animal ambulance to the RSPCA vet after it was reported that the kitten had been badly injured and dragging her back legs around the area for several days, initially the lady who called tried to claim the kitten was a stray (she was in fact a house sitter for Squirrel’s owners).
As it turns out Squirrel’s owners were overseas, and had only arranged for someone to check on her every few days in an outdoor enclosure (it is actually illegal to leave your animals for more than 24 without food, water and exercise), poor Squirrel then subsequently escaped and was hit by a car and left for dead. After 3 days rather than seek vet attention themselves, the house sitter called the RSPCA and tried to have the cat taken as a stray, suggesting they put her to sleep.
Squirrel was rescued by SFR as a 5 week old stray along with her 4 brothers and sisters and her mother. The photos along with this post are of little Squirrel growing up at our shelter. Luckily SFR always stay listed as a back up contact on all animals microchips and when the RSPCA were unable to contact the overseas owner they phoned us and we were able to start piecing together the puzzle of what had happened to this poor cat. We are deeply saddened that Squirrel’s family let her down so badly.
It took us a little over 24 hours to reach the owners who were unwilling/unable to pay for the possible surgeries Squirrel will require and ultimately signed over ownership to Sydney Fox Rescue to pursue treatment. We are ALWAYS here for any cat or kitten we have ever adopted out and ready to step in and provide the care they need no matter how much time has passed.
Squirrel’s current vet bill is sitting at $730, she has spinal damage and is unable to express her bladder on her own, yesterday afternoon she was X-rayed and had full bloods run, she is also on strong pain medication. We will be seeing the vet again this morning for test results and discuss possible surgeries and other treatment options.
This is a huge bill for us at a difficult time of year when we have 27 cats and kittens in care as well as our other rescues and bills are stacking up. If you can spare just $5 toward Squirrel’s bill it would take a weight off our mind.
