I emailed the cotton on service saying this:

Hi, I was wondering if the Rubi cosmetics are tested on animals or if any of the ingredients are tested on animals
Thank you, Indy

And they replied with this:

"No, none of our Cotton On cosmetics are not tested on animals." 1 too many negatives I think.

If this http://cottonon.com/AU/shop-by-category/cotton-on-foundation/cosmetics/?region=AU is all they have then it's vegan. The lip balm has shea butter which is  fat extracted from the nut of the African shea tree (Vitellaria paradoxa).

Aaah .. I see http://cottonon.com/AU/shop-by-brand/rubi-shoes/shop-accessories/beauty/?prefn1=countrySpecificMarkets&pmin=0&prefv1=AU®ion=AU   this is the place.

As it comes from China ... mmm. I'd say yes, they test on animals, but I've mailed PETA aus to check.

"none of our Cotton On cosmetics are not tested on animals."
This might be what they should have wrote!

From 2013 http://prime.peta.org/2013/11/chinacos
"In a new development, the China Food and Drug Administration (CFDA) has made a decision that could allow some cosmetics companies to stop conducting cruel, archaic tests on animals and switch to modern, humane testing methods. The CFDA has given companies that manufacture cosmetics within China’s borders the go-ahead to submit their own data on their products’ toxicity to the government, rather than being forced to pay the government to conduct animal tests on their behalf. This means that companies may choose to use only in vitro (test tube) tests."
So the companies are going to check their own products? Yeah, never happen.

Thanks for your email and for caring about animals. It's awesome to know that there are compassionate people like you taking action for animals and choosing to live a cruelty-free lifestyle! Animals need all the help we can give them, and we welcome your support.

At this time, we don't have any information about Cotton On and Rubi cosmetics. This could be for one of two reasons. Some companies have refused to respond to specific questions about their testing practices. It appears likely that these companies do test on animals at some stage of product development, and their refusal to clarify their testing policies appears to be an attempt to mislead consumers.

Other companies may be new. If you find a company not included on our lists, we encourage you to contact this company and inquire about their specific animal testing policy and ask to be directed to a statement online.

I also recommend that you check out the Australian website, Choose Cruelty Free ( see http://www.choosecrueltyfree.org.au/ ) and contact them about this specific inquiry. The website is set up by an Australian non-profit organisation that actively campaigns for the end of animal testing. The site hosts a comprehensive list of products and companies available to Australian consumers and tells you if a company is cruelty-free. They may have information pertaining to these specific cosmetic brands.

Please note, that it used to be the case that if a product was manufactured in China then it was required to be tested on animals. However, recent legislation states that it's no longer necessary for products manufactured in China to be tested on animals. This means that it's not certain that these particular cosmetic companies test on animals purely because they're made in China. You can find out more about this recent legislation on PETA US' page here: http://www.peta.org/blog/progress-china-allows-cosmetics-marketed-without-animal-tests/

Thanks again for your email, and for your actions for animals. Keep up the great work!

Have sent a question to Choose Cruelty Free now, so we'll have to wait to hear what they say.

They were quick to reply, and wheels are in motion,
"We haven’t invited this company to apply for CCF Accreditation before so we will do that today. Cotton On is a big organisation so I hope we can reach the right person!

Whether or not this company is eligible for accreditation will depend on when the last animal-testing of their ingredients and/or finished product was conducted.

You may like to check back with us in a couple of weeks to see if we have had any reply."

Cheers
Wendy
