The trial began Friday of the animal rights group Empty Cages (tomma burar in Swedish).

They liberated 8 hens, 2 pigs and 1 salmon and since they reported themselves to the Police and even left cookies for the farmer(!) it should be interesting.

Before the trial started a demonstration was held outside the courthouse - photos and video on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/tommaburar - and lots of free publicity in local, national press and radio. It could come and cost them dearly as they'll be certainly charged to pay court costs, damages to the farmers, fines etc. and possible jail time.

Sentancing is due 29th January.

According to their Facebook page they were glad to have their 4 hours in court to talk animal rights.
They admit to taking the animals but as they are living beings it was not theft, according to them.

(worth a listen to if you're thinking about going vegge/vegan)

Verdict - 1 to jail for a month (because of previous convictions) and fines for the others. Total some 36,000 Swedish Crowns, which got raised within 24 hours online!
