In September 2015, PETA investigators traveled to South Africa, where they documented the horrors of the ostrich leather industry at the largest ostrich slaughter companies in the world.
Wild ostriches can live until they are 40 years old, but farmed ostriches are killed at just 1 year of age, and their skin is used to make so-called "luxury" bags, boots, watch bands, and other accessories by Hermès, Prada, Louis Vuitton, and other top European fashion houses. Inside the slaughterhouses, PETA documented that these birds are forced into restraining devices, electrically stunned, and slaughtered by having their throats cut.
Eyewitness investigations continue to expose the cruelty behind exotic skins. This investigation follows a recent exposé of Hermès alligator and crocodile skin suppliers, which revealed that some animals remained conscious for minutes after the slaughter process was badly botched. With your help, we can get these fashion giants to remove ostrich and other exotic skins from their collections and end this cruel industry. All you have to do is take action today.
