I did my budget.  Long story short I am covering family members bills and am left with $46 a month for food.  So what could I eat that will keep me healthy in that budget?

If you have farms nearby consider purchasing fresh farm products. They are cheaper and healthy too.

Maybe consider growing your own vegetable garden if you have the space?  If you don't have a big garden there's a lot of varieties these days that are happy in a pot as well.

There's also quite a few sites with recipes you can try out at home and information about vegan friendly food you can buy at Woolworths or Coles (which can be on special quite regularly).  Some of my favourites:

My advice would be borrow some money from anyone you can if this is your situation. If you are able, earn some more money. I know I hear of people getting by on so little money, but the thought of spending this little on food intake in a month blows my mind. If any friend of family member knew this was your situation, I'm sure they would be willing to lend you some money. All the best.

Soups and pasta always a good idea. A little tofu can go a long way in currys etc.

Seasonal foods that are cheap. Make sure you get every coupon, special offer flyer, all the local stores promotional ads, etc.

Hi, I made an account to reply =)

Firstly, that sucks, it really does.

I would get the biggest cheapest bag of oats I could find (100% oats, don't get those processed ones with milk in them), they taste great cooked just with water.

A big cheap bag of potatoes would be another choice of mine. Eat them boiled, steamed, microwaved, baked, cut them into chips, chunks, have whole, whichever way is yum.

Any leftover money I would get a cheap tomato sauce for the potatoes, and brown (or any) sugar to have with the porridge (switch to berries and add flax seed meal when you can afford).

If you're Aussie, get on social security if you can.  If already on it, you can get advances easily on the website (about twice a year).

You can also get free food from churches and other places you will have to look into.  They might have canned goods like beans, peas, corn etc.

Good luck

I agree with some of the others, if you have room, definitely try and grow your own tomatoes, spinach, capsicum etc. I used to grow those (plus a wide range of herbs) purely out of pots at my last place. Those three are quite nutritious, but they're also my faves so choose whatever you love to eat happy

If you have no room (or particularly enterprising possums which I'm currently dealing with), buy what you can from markets in the way of lentils, beans, grains and fresh veg. You want to go for max nutrition in what you do eat.. brown rice, lentils, chickpeas, kidney beans.. cook those and mix with fresh spinach and sautéed carrots, mushrooms, sweet potato and other veggies with black peppercorns, garlic powder, cumin and chilli powder? yum.  Make big batches at once so you can buy in bulk..

Good luck! xx

Elon Musk lived on $30 a month on food when he was broke and building his companies.
Now his worth 13 billion.
if he could do it, you can do it for $46. It is very tough and will worsen your health though.
Stay Strong.

okay so here is an example of a shop you can do for under $20 a fortnight as a vegan. just make sure to get supermarket brands when possible!

- rolled oats
- soy milk
- coles bakery bread (just read the ingredients i cant remember the name of the vegan one)
- peanut butter
- potatoes
- apples
-sultanas
- frozen mixed veggies and stirfry veggie mix
- brown rice
- canned kidney beans, chickpeas, lentils, baked beans

examples of meals you can do:
breakfast:
oats (top them with apple, peanut butter or sultanas!)
baked beans on toast
pb on toast

lunch:
baked potato (top it with baked beans maybe?)
fried rice w mixed veggies
curried chickpeas (just cook them in curry powder! they make a good sandwich filling too)

dinner:
stir fry veggies fried up with lentils (soy sauce is pretty cheap!)
mixed veggie or veggie and bean curry
if you have pasta and passata, lentil bolognaise

just use this as a rough guide. and dont be afraid to go to food cupboards. many will have accidentally vegan stuff! and markets are great too.
