From The Nonhuman Rights Project http://www.nonhumanrights.org/

In a stunning about-face in the wake of pressure from the NhRP and others, the New Iberia Research Center (NIRC) has finallyagreed to free 220 chimps – including Hercules and Leo – to a new state-of-the-art 236-acre outdoor sanctuary in Blue Ridge, GA.

This is huge and a direct consequence of our work and your support.

The vast majority of these chimpanzees were born in research facilities—and Hercules and Leo lived in a basement lab at Stony Brook University for the last six years—so the fact that they’ll have a chance to live in a habitat that closely resembles their natural environment is fantastic news for them. It’s what we’ve all been fighting for.

This is a major victory for the Nonhuman Rights Project and for Hercules and Leo and the other chimpanzees imprisoned at NIRC. Now we need to make sure NIRC follows through with their pledge – and that they do not delay. They are already saying the process may take years. We want Hercules and Leo and the other 220 chimpanzees moved as soon as possible and we intend to keep increasing pressure on NIRC until this happens.
