Hi, has anyone ever heard of egg being in tofu?
I ordered a vegan Thai stir fry tonight and they said they had to check if there was egg in the tofu, and, sure enough, there was and I ended up with just vegetables!!!
I have NEVER heard of this before, in fact, never in my wildest dreams would I have even thought this was a possibility! Tofu/bean curd is totally vegetarian and vegan friendly, right? Maybe WRONG...
I feel rattled thinking maybe I've been eating some non vegan food here and there unwittingly.

So, has anyone heard of egg in tofu?
"Japan bean curd") is the main type of savory flavored tofu. Whole beaten eggs are combined with dashi, poured into molds, and steamed in a steamer (cf. chawanmushi). The tofu has a pale golden color that can be attributed to the addition of egg and, occasionally, food coloring. This tofu has a fuller texture and flavor than silken tofu, which can be attributed to the presence of egg fat and protein. Plain "dried tofu" can be flavored by stewing in soysauce (ๆปท) to make soy-sauce tofu. It is quite common to see tofu sold in market in this soy-sauce stewed form.
