"As a nation we have a fundamental responsibility to protect our children," Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull said while announcing the inquiry. A failure to do so "diminishes all of us", he added.
The royal commission was prompted by graphic images of child abuse aired by the ABC's Four Corners on Monday, following several reports into misconduct in the NT juvenile justice system.
