Japan plans to increase its annual catch of whales in the northwestern Pacific Ocean for research purposes by about 100 to 314, an expansion expected to draw opposition from anti-whaling countries.
The 12-year plan, from fiscal 2017 to fiscal 2028, was submitted to the International Whaling Commission (IWC) on Nov. 9.
Japan is conducting research whaling in the northwestern Pacific Ocean, including in areas off Hokkaido, and the Antarctic Ocean with the aim to resume commercial whaling.
