On Tuesday, March 7, 2017, four House representatives (Alcee L. Hastings, D-Fla., Vern Buchanan, R-Fla., Dave Trott, R-Mich. and Brendan Boyle, D-Pa) introduced the Dog and Cat Meat Prohibition Act of 2017, which would ban the slaughter and trade of dogs and cats for human consumption in the U.S.

This is an important step, and long overdue. While many Americans are horrified by the barbaric dog and cat meat trade in Asia, most are unaware that the very same cruelty happens in their homeland, too.

Shockingly, dog and cat meat is still legal in 44 states. LCA's own undercover investigations have exposed dog meat in both California and Wisconsin -- where we documented stolen family pets being slaughtered for their meat.

Introducing the new bill to the House, Rep. Hastings said, "The United States' position on this cruel and brutal practice should be unequivocal: dogs and cats should not be killed in this country for the consumption of their meat. It is with utmost importance that the United States unifies animal cruelty laws in all 50 states and explicitly bans the killing of dogs and cats for human consumption."

LCA agrees, and fully supports this groundbreaking legislation.
