Having "rights" is a human concept - theres no reason to impose this on other animals. We should just let them live their lives in peace, coexist peacefully with them, and not treat them like machines. Just because we are the "top of the food chain" (Which is only because we have tools such as guns, knives etc - I'd like to see a meat eater kill a lion with his bare hands) doesn't mean we have to treat other animals like shit.
I think people mean 'rights' in the sense of: every creature has the 'right' to live their lives naturally and not have pain inflicted on them by others. Everyone deserves the right to be free of ownership by another.
It is a human concept, the animals would not need this right if it weren't for the evolutionary mistake that is the Human Being
