In terms of health, it's best to do any diet changes slowly over a number of weeks,  by switching from say... ice cream to soy ice cream.. or yoghurt to soy yoghurt.. butter to nuttelex.

That's fantastic you're making the switch! happy

To make it easy.. everything to start off with is available at the supermarket:

Margarine - Tablelands or Nuttlelex
Milk - So Good, Vitasoy milks (soy, rice etc) - longlife aisle
Ice-Cream - So Good or Frozen Fruit - Gelativo (passionfruit or lemon/lime only).
Chocolate - Sweet Williams (health aisle)
Hand soap/shampoos/bodywash/laundry/multi sprays - Natures Organics
Frys (sausage rolls/sausages/cottage pie/schnitzels) All Vegan. In freezer section.
Tofu/Tempeh -near dairy cheese
Sanitarium products (but not all vegan friendly)- near dairy cheese.
Tofutti cheese - near dairy cheese

And:
Soy cheese - online at either www.crueltyfreeshop.com.au or www.veganperfection.com.au
Eggs: Egg Replacer from www.crueltyfreeshop.com.au

My mum found egg replacer in Woolworths, the brand is called Organ, and it comes in a box.
I don't know what section she found it in...probably the health food aisle.... Well, it says it's gluten free in really big letters on the front, so it might be with the gluten free section...

Anyways, for eggs (so I hear) you can replace them with stuff like half a mashed banana or other things, I think it depends on what kind of food you're making. Scrambled eggs can be replaced by scrambling tofu. I haven't tried it though...Btw, I'm not vegan yet, but I'm starting to make the transition. I've just read this stuff on other posts, there's another post on this forum called "Substitutes", there's more info there.

Go you for starting to veganise!!  cool

Oh yeah sorry, they also sell it at Woolies now. The last box I bought was online and has latest me absolutely ages!

Oh no Matt, you can't find Frys! sad Where do you usually shop? Most Woolies/Coles/Franklins stock at least 2 different products.

Those tiny teddies, do you mean outback animals? All Organ products are vegan  broccoli

well if you consider them as teddy bears, as in the cuddly soft toy, rather than adorable bear found in the wilderness, that would be okay tongue

Thank god for Organ eh?!?! This is where I find most of my treats... in the Organ boxes. I am yet to try the Teddies though..... oh also some of the "Freedom Foods" range is vegan too! Be sure to check the label though happy

If your local Woolies doesn't stock the Organ brand, your local health shop (if it's a good one) will. I think the main reason Woolies stock it is for the gluten free aspect... not for us poor vegans.

Also Matt - only Woolies stocks Fry's (in WA anyway!). All the stores seem to carry different ranges though. Your local may only have 2 stocks so you may accidentally breeze right past it - I know I did for ages! In my Woolies they are near all the hamburgers (WHY?!?!?) and not always next door to the Sanitarium frozen goods... >.> they like to make it difficult!

Now back to the original question - I started by cutting obvious dairy... so your milk, eggs, cheese, butter. Be careful as eggs (or egg whites) are in almost EVERYTHING!!! Also some ingredient lists mention milk POWDER, or whey (whey is mostly found in snacks form health food stores I have found). Don't get too hard on yourself if you purchase and consume something that has one of these nasty ingredients... just learn from it, enjoy it one last time and say goodbye!

Oh also honey! Honey is hidden in things.... like Norganic Soya Mayo..... gah!!! And some breads too.

The Sani products that are vegan are the sausages, the deli luncheon (in the little rolls), the mince (the frozen stuff, the stuff in a can "casserole mince" MAY contain traces of milk, egg and something else, but this is more a warning as it's made on the same machinery as other products).... & that's all I think - someone correct me if I'm wrong... but the bacon, deli slices, fillets, schnitzels, burger patties & kebabs all have egg or egg whites in them. Not sure about the lentil patties though? Mmm lentil patties =P~~

As someone said - take it day by day. You can't switch overnight (unless your REALLY committed) it can take weeks, months, perhaps a good year before you are really vegan. And again don't beat yourself up over it if you are taking a little longer... do it in your own time. You are making a difference already by making the change.

Best of luck with the change! And always remember we are all here for you happy

That's enough of my dribble hehe
