The Ethics of What We Eat by Peter Singer
Committed by Dan Mathews (more anecdotal but an awesome read on PETAs development)
Vegan: The New Ethics of Eating by Erik Marcus (you can download this one for free, just google it)
The Case for Animal Rights by Tom Regan (A very highbrow book)
Animal Rights: History and Scope of a Radical Social Movement by Harold D Guither
Christine's Ark by John Little (another true story, about Christine Townend an Australian; really great book)
I highly recommend "Animal Liberation" by Peter Singer (Australian philosopher).
You know, I can't find that book anywhere! I ask the people at every bookstore I see, but nothing. Hmmm, I might buy it online....
And isn't it American?
I really recommend "Pleasurable Kingdom". Cant remember the author, but the foreword is by Peter Singer. It has a picture of a piglet on the front.
Its a great book because its not about how animals can feel pain, but how they can also feel happiness, joy and pleasure.
I highly recommend "Animal Liberation" by Peter Singer (Australian philosopher).

I think singer is an Australian.. but I think he's a Professor Princeton (?) now. Not 100% sure. So I guess the book is Australian?
Singer is definitely an Aussie. From memory his book covers everything that's wrong with industrialised animal abuse across the major countries that produce and test animal products, including the U.S. His book is quite philosophical in its grounding for the case for animal rights.
His original intention with the book was to debunk the animal rights philosophy, but realised that he could not fault its ethics. His book "Animal Liberation" is often regarded as the foundation of the modern animal rights movement. I have a few copies of this book and share it among people I meet (with the instruction that they don't give it back, but find someone else to pass it onto!). I must have bought more than 10 copies by now!
It's quite a popular book; any good book store should have it, if not I'm sure you can request it.
