Experiences being vegan

ive been quite lucky, in primary school one of my teachers was a vegetarian so when the school had bbqs, fetes, camps etc she always knew what to feed me and helped my mum with ideas and nutrition.
high school was also generally good. i got given a bit of grief by people killing spiders and bees etc but my friends were really really supportive of my diet. the school was also considerate when it came to lunches/dinners/camps etc.
uni was fine as a vegetarian. people were generally open minded (not as much as in highschool and primary school, which is odd because i grew up in the country). i made the switch to veganism though and actually lost a few friends. i no longer get invited to as many social things and struggle to get anything to eat at on campus. i did a teaching round at a country school and was pleasantly surprised when the school was very supportive and inquisitive about my diet.
ive found that generally if you believe in what you are doing and are quite strong about it people will accept it. if they dont, then theyre great ones to remember why you are doing what you are doing - who would want to be like them?! beaverhug ( i just had to add the beaver, hes awesome)

My friends are actually okay. We're in year 11 now, so I guess we've matured some ...  ashamed
Although I was lacto-ovo, and went vegan these holidays. They had a bit of a hard time swallowing that. I'm also pretty hot-tempered (heh... understatement) so any innocent/ignorant/slightly mean comments made result in a huge blow-up vegan pride rant. Overall though, they're pretty accepting happy

My friends at school HATE that I'm vegan. Being year 12, I thought they'd be more mature, but apparently not. I am seriously not allowed to mention anything related to veganism/animal activism. If I do, all hell rains down on me. How DARE I preach to them by declaring my happiness at a new vegetarian/vegan restaurant! Haha.

In year 12 last year we had use of a kitchen, so I would bring leftovers or things to heat up in the kitchen. I'm not really a big lunch eater at school, so the years before I would just snack on an apple or something similar. Honestly, my friends at school were really open, and if I brought something to school which was vegan and new to them, they'd all be eager to try it and praise it happy

But I have had to cut off a few friendships because of things they have said about my veganism over facebook. One of them actually posted a video entitled 'cow vs train' (no need to watch to guess what it was about) to another friend's wall and told them to use it against me when we next had a philosophical debate on veganism. I haven't spoken to her in months because what she did was so insulting to me.

This year will be my first year being vegan at school, but last year I was vegetarian and it was pretty easy. When people ask you about being vegetarian/vegan you can use it as an opporunity to educate them about factory farms.

I am horrified to think teachers would not only openly disagree with some of you let alone bully you!? When I become a teacher I can't wait to subtlely get kids thinking about alternatives. Having been vego only a few months I havebt had too much experience with asswipe comments...however I think if I did I wouldn't be taking it lightly!!!

I'm also a little surprised at young many school vego/vegans there are! Good on you youngins! I think I only know 2 vegetarians personally...kinda sad:-/

Reading this thread makes me realize just how lucky I was. I went to an alternative senior high school, and I'd make an estimate that at least 10% of people there were vegans; many more were vegetarian. The school was very good about supporting veg*nism, particularly as many of my teachers were vegetarian (I believe 4 out of 7 of out the teachers I had were vegetarian).

If only every school were like that.

My friends weren't too bad, they didn't understand really, but after i threw a partly-vegan-fully-veg party (and didn't tell most of them) they appreciated it a bit more, in fact one of my friends is (slowly) becoming vegetarian and most of my other friends really support and help my animal rants and whatever, and i know 2 other vegetarians at my school. happy
Some of the guys have been dickheads though, but idrc.

I've had that too, all of my science teachers went mental, they start shouting and talking about how i would be at weak and all of that type of stuff. A lot of the students really try to catch me out as well.
If your teachers are giving you grief, just tell them that you don't appreciate being 'bullied' and if they continue to harrass you you will be writing a letter to the board of education and the principal about it. Bullying in no form is tolerated in schools.
Try to get them fired. I'm usually nice but for some reason i have always wanted to get someone fired...
