for red they normally use either cochineal or carmine which is the crushed up bodies of insects; it takes about 155,000 insects to make one kilogram of cochineal.  ladybug
they should be listed on the labels and is also known as E120

I just use the normal pink food dye (with no insect products) but add heaps, so that its really really dark and almost red looking

You can bet that if they were forced to label the ingredients PROPERLY, then there wouldn't be half the number of animal ingredients in food as there is today... Who in their right minds would want to eat crushed bugs given the choice???

The regular red from woolies is vegan as far as I know. It's 124 and synthetic (correct me if I'm wrong! 120 is cochineal).
