If you picked up the age today and turned to page 8 of the "The Green Issue," you would have found a whole section on 'food ethics!' A two page spread, in fact! The Age even went as far as calling food ethics, "the cause of the moment."

It included info on how to cut down on your meat intake, damning statistics in regard to the amount of water wasted by Victoria's dairy industry (35% of Victoria's total irrigation), ALY's 'Slap the Butcher campaign' and lots of information on the cruelty of factory farms - particularly sow stalls and broiler & battery farms.

Now, as if that wasn't good enough, 2 pages prior to this 2 page spread you will find ANOTHER 2 page spread on 'the ethics of eating.' And although it was not limited to vegetarianism/veganism (instead including the advantages of eating local produce, free range meat and steering off unsustainably farmed fish etc), there was a whole column on veganism! Accompanied with the column was a link to the VNV website! So you never know, maybe a few more people will be joining us after reading through these articles.

Francis was also included in the article and some information on the "Slap the Butcher" campaign... which I'm sure we all think is pretty cool tongue

Just thought I'd share my surprise at this wealth of information in a mainstream publication with the rest of you tongue

The Age has always been much better than the Herald Sun with climate change & animal ethics. Especially since the Herald Sun is controlled by and features stubborn right-wingers (i.e. Andrew Bolt = douche)

yeh, i don't like the News Limited publications. it's a shame that the national paper is controlled by them too.

I think the spread was really great, really an indication of just how much the movement is growing.

10 or 20 years ago there would be nothing in the paper about issues like climate change other than the occasional spread and look at where that is now! It's an issue government's are winning elections over (though not really following through on their promises...)

I especially liked Richard Cornish's (the writer) statement of "flesh is the new fur". As fur, at least in Australia, is very much frowned upon by mainstream society as "cruel and unneccesary"... This is something the average meat eater will agree with.. Meat is just as cruel and just as unnecessary so it're really an excellent juxtoposition and hopefully will get a lot of people thinking!

Thx for the link up!

I wish my paper would publish something like this.

Last time there was a story about this Indian lady pushing vegetarianism the letters to the editor were flooded with dickheads giving this person, and all veg*ns, shit. So I guess they will prob never run something else like it again sad
