I'm sorry to hear about your stories *cries*. I know what it's like to lose a pet.

I remember my cat Bonnie who died a few years ago. She was around 18 and was having problems with her memory and her body functioning. After an accident, she was injured and had to be put down. I stayed with her until her last moments. I cried for days after. She'd been in my life since I was born and she was like a sister to me. In the same year, I also lost my bird and rabbit. cry
Nawwwwwww, don't cry *hugs*

Thanks for sharing everyone. They're good to read, it's nice to know animals are loved. I work with animals, and see so many bad things. I'm not allowed to mention abuse cases at work though.

The most traumatic thing I experienced was losing 3 of my bunnies to myxomatosis.
I had 9 bunnies at that time, and it's so contagious I was to prepare myself for losing all of them. Every day I woke up expecting to see more symptoms of myxo. I was very very lucky to "only" lose 3. They were all put down in the early stages, it's a cruel disease and I didn't want to let them suffer. I have mosquito wire, use revolution for mites and fleas, but it didn't work. I know of people with inside rabbits who have lost their bunnies to myxo as well, so no bunny is safe until we get a vaccine. I had depression for months.
Last year, we got so many bunnies dumped in our overnight pens with myxo, it was so depressing.

Also, looking after bunnies rescued from a meat farm is depressing/wonderful. Some don't make it so all you can be thankful of is their nice death and brief wonderful time outside of those cages. My remaining meat farm rabbit has twisted/arthritic forelegs, so I won't have him long-term sad

Up until last year, I had a beautiful kitty named Lux, she was a present from my mum from when my boyfriend and I broke up and she literally pulled me through that tough time when I had no one else.

Almost exactly a year ago, I was a work and my housemate called me and told me that Lux had jumped the fence into the next door neighbors yard and their huge dog had mauled her, she said she thought Lux was dead but she wasn't sure as the neighbors had taken her into their house. I was walking to the car park as she called and I ran to my car crying and screaming and praying that she would make it.

It normally only took me 15 minutes to get home but this day the traffic was horrible and I was so frustrated knowing my little baby girl needed me to be with her. I couldn't even see the road through the tears but I finally made it home and walked in to find Lux in a cardboard box on the table. She just looked like she was sleeping but at the same time I could tell there was something missing.

I was so so distraught, I couldn't breathe through all the sobbing, I threw up and then I took the box into my room and just patted her for hours. It was horrible to feel her broken bones under her soft fur. I stayed in there telling her how much I loved her until my best friend came over and said we had to go bury her.

I have another cat now, but I will never ever forget Lux, she was the most gorgeous girl in the whole world. cry

Oh such sad stories, I can understand the pain of losing pets. cry

About a month ago, I came home to find one of my rats clinging to the cage with a pointy spine and a very fearful look in her face. I had had my rats around 3 years at this point, so I knew her time was soon to come, but I quickly picked her up out of the cage with such a struggle and realised she was no more than skin and bone, this was a surprise to me as I feed them a good and frequent diet. I sat in my school clothes nursing her on my chest for about 9 hours, crying and telling her how much I loved her and was so grateful that she was such a loving and playful pet and friend. That whole night was like a bitter-sweet nightmare having to look into her deep eyes full of confusion, fear and fatigue. It had been hours nursing her, and she was still struggling to stay alive, I knew it was any minute that she would give in but she didn't, it was well past my bedtime and she was still alive, and I knew that if I put her to bed she would pass-away from being too cold. I had to make the heart-breaking decision to put her to bed, so I wrapped her up in three layers of warm cloth and gave her a nice big kiss. When I got up that next morning she was gone.

I'll never forget that look in her eye, so vulnerable and confused... but clearly grateful that I was there with her. It was that experience that made me vegetarian, to think of the billions of animals who die every year with that same look in that eye, I've never been able to look at a cow happily grazing in a paddock without thinking of that very look that Yeesha had in her eye, and that that cow would one day, too, experience the same thing.

Sorry, I know that's a long and sad story, but for me it's a valuable experience as it was the final realisation of the silent yet emotional value that every animals has.
That is an inspirational story, that you knew you had to end her suffering, even though all you wanted was to never let go. I believe that was a very selfless thing to do, when you could have acted on what you wanted, in having her in your arms for longer, to hold onto her, never let her go, but instead you chose what was best for her, to end her suffering, even though it basically killed you inside.

You are a great person happy
