I currently donate monthly via direct debit to two charities. These charities are the RSPCA and Greenpeace Australia. I am interested to know other peoples' views of these particular charities and also if you donate to a charity regularly, if so, which one/s?

Hey thanks Karen, very interesting! I have recently heard some negativity towards both RSPCA and Greenpeace and was mainly wondering what others had maybe heard. I am debating as to whether my money may be better spent elsewhere?

If you need some reasons why Animals Australia would be a good choice let me know wink

Thanks Jesse! I am going to be changing one of my Charities to Animals Australia but I'm not sure which one yet. Was going to see what others had to say about both charities first. I will possibly change both.

Keep Green Peace.
Ditch RSPCA.
I'll give you some reasons.
1. They receive heaps of government funding and as such really don't need your money.
2. They don't care about factory farmed animals; they don't offer any support to them in the form of pushing legislation to protect them.
3. They're shelters are kill shelters. They hold an animal for 6 weeks and then euthanize regardless of the situation the animal is from.
4. They don't offer free desexing; just cheaper desexing. They can easily afford it but they don't offer it for free.
5. They support kangaroo culls throughout Australia.
6. The size of the kennels that they keep the animals in are often very small.
7. They put their name on eggs that are known NOT to be free-range through under cover investigations.
8. They won't use undercover footage if the company in question gives them funding; like pace farms.

That's why I hate The RSPCA...

Wow... How disappointing... I can't believe that I've been contributing to this... Thanks for heads up though! I appreciate it!

These are all very big misconceptions.

- RSPCA NSW only receive something like $411,000 a year funding from the Government.
- They don't have a no-kill policy, but do NOT euthanise as many animals as people would think. Once animals are in adoptions, they are NOT on a time restriction (definitely not 6 weeks, I don't know where you got this from?) They will stay there until rehomed. The only exception to this is if the animal goes backwards, developing serious anxiety issues (that cannot be amended by foster care), health issues, escapism behavior etc.
- The RSPCA shelters do not euthanise strays, they hold them for 3-7 days, before they are transported back to their allocated council pounds. (I know this is a gripe of many people, however it ultimately gives that dog/cat potentially 7 more days to be reclaimed/rehomed).
- All surrenders will most likely be put into adoptions to be rehomed- it is only if they fail their behavior assessment that they will be euthanised, and everyone genuinely hopes they pass.
-The kennels are a pretty reasonable size, and all animals get exercised throughout the day.
- Free desexing? It is pretty cheap and they can't afford to be giving anything away- there are A LOT of costs involved in the shelter which they have to cover.

The only thing I would agree with is that its slightly disappointing regarding their lack of involvement in Factory Farming, which is my number one animal welfare concern. But that's a whole other world of its own, and they really don't have the resources to tackle that on top of all the work they already do.

The reason I'm saying this is because I had similar views to you before I was shown otherwise.

Anyway, back on topic. I donate monthly to:
Doggie Rescue
RSPCA
World Vision

And I give one of donations, when I can, to:
Animals Australia
WSPA

I don't like the RSPCA because they're for animal welfare, not animal rights. In other words they believe in killing and eating them 'humanely' confused which is a bit of an oxymoron ( I love that word!)
Also, for the RSPCA cupcake day, they asked on their website for people to use eggs approved by the RSPCA, but didn't mention butter/milk, which I think is totally stupid.
