Basically, it's going to places where animals are abused - particularly factory farms - and rescuing animals that are suffering (well they all are..) And it's doing it openly, in other words, there will be documentation of the rescues and the rescuers will stand behind their actions.
I'm interested to hear people's opinions on this...
NOTE: Rescues should not be done unless people are absolutely sure of what they are doing, are aware of the necessary requirements and have a well thought out plan of action.
I don't agree with donation money being used to feed these animals.
I wonder why that is? If it wasn't for people donating to ALV the number of animals they rescue at openrescues would be much smaller because they wouldn't have the money to take care of so many. It's an amazing thing seeing a crippled animal grow into a strong and healthy/happy one. One of the recently rescued broiler hens once could not walk at all, one day she stood up and is now the healthiest birds of the 14 we rescued. I'd love to fund taking animals out of hell holes and giving them a decent life.
Donation money also goes to ALV campaigns promoting veganism, I think these campaigns and openrescue are equally important.
Of course it is and I intend on doing the same when I purchase land at the end of this year but it is very important to put lots of money into educating the public as this saves more lives.

Openrescues are also a part of vegan education. Without them ALV wouldn't have the hard evidence to give to people about how animals are treated in farms. If they went in there and took footage and left with nothing people would probably be criticising them too. In the end it's all about the animals, there a plenty of animal rights group educating the public who have far better resources than ALV, very few of them take direct action in saving animals lives, which I understand not everybody can do. I just don't understand how you can say these rescued animals are not worthy of your money to stay alive?
If they want to do that then that's fine but as far as I've heard they don't tell people that their donated money goes to food etc and I wouldn't be impressed if i was donating and wanted my money to go education purposes etc. I never said they are not worthy, as clearly i just said i am getting my own animals down the track so i suggest you do not put words in my mouth again.

I think you misunderstood me. I wasn't putting words in your mouth, I understood that you said you were getting your own animals which is great, I didn't mean to make seem that you didn't care for these animals. I just think what you're saying is educating people is more important than feeding these rescued animals. I think education and saving animals are just as important as each other in the animal rights movement. If ALV don't say they spend it on feeding animals how do you know? They would never hide what they do with their money and as far as I know they just state their donations go to helping animals, which isn't a lie. I'm sure if you asked them to spend your money on education only they'd be happy too. I didn't mean to sound rash or anything...
Apple Scruff,
at this KFC protest, ALV bought rescued chickens from KFC's supplier farms to show people the direct impact their choices are having on these poor birds. Can you tell me how the public reacted to actually seeing the bird/s up close?
Problem is it's a drop in the ocean for a problem that is getting larger by the day, where does one draw the line? The number of animals is just increasing by the day due to human demand. But I would like to see something set up like sea shepherd where you select where your money goes etc.
It is a drop in the ocean, but so is everything we can do.
I think open rescues are an integral part of the movement as they are about taking direct, tangible action towards reducing and eliminating the suffering of animals. Not only is about the individuals rescued, but it is, as zoe said, about the documentation of the grotesque conditions which then helps with vegan education and one example of thiss....
the kfc demo.
this was an ALY organised demo out the front of a busy kfc in melbourne, we had activisxts wearing bio-suits to highlight the direct link between disease and animal agriculture and we also brought a long three of the birds that had been rescued a week or two beforehand. These birds had legs bent backwards, couldn't walk properly, had lost many feathers and their skin was obvious and red raw in many parts. There was also compacted hard manure glued to their leg joints.
The public reacted to this, as expected, with shock. The birds were well-looked after, away from the noise and inside a hay filled carrier and big basket. Many many passers by inspected the birds and expressed their disgust at their state. This was then a good time for us to discuss with them the inherent cruelty of animal agriculture, notably facotry farming, and then provide them with the solution - veganism.
The public were outraged and very sympathetic towards us/the birds and throughout the demo there was a constant crowd of concerned passers by surrounding the birds and conversing with acvtivits.
So open rescues can be and often are inextricably linked with vegan education efforts.
Another reason they are important, in my view, is because they are acts of civil disobedience. As we see from any social movement these are important - to flout the obsolete and unreasonable law i.e segregation in the 50s and 60s. If people all around the world perfiorm open rescues at a grass roots level it icould be a hiuge shot in the arm to the animal movement.
