I actually find the actions of the RSPCA very disturbing. I watched a four corners program from 4 or 5 years ago ( google it and have a look) and it demonstrates the hypocrisy of the RSPCA. They do nothing to help factory farmed (or even just farmed) animals. They do NOT help all creatures great and small. There are so many barristers and lawyers willing to prosecute these criminals for the rspca but the rspca just don't bother.
Another thing they have done that is awful is put their brand sticker on pace farm barn laid eggs. Now we all know that there is little difference to these hens and battery hens. Further, pace farms still produce eggs from battery hens so they are still profiting from cruelty and the RSPCA is condoning this.
On their facebook page, they said oh thank you to hills science diet for a years worth of food for snowy ( that beautiful cat that was tragically tortured). I wrote to the RSPCA on their site and said I found it very worrying that they were promoting hills science diet when the company is owned by colgate palmolive who cut animals open alive for " testing" and experimentation. The rspca then deleted my comment when I only told the truth. So they have an agenda which really isn't to help ALL animals great and small.
Oh. Wow. Well, I never liked the RSPCA, but now they've lost all my support. =/

I've started buying my eggs locally, from a small farmer-type guy... I've seen the chickens, how they live... it seems pretty good... and their orange cat loves me =D I gave him a BIG cuddle when I was there. But I'm still a little skeptical... you never know what happens behind closed doors...
But the eggs aren't for me anyway... I'm trying to get my family to avoid buying eggs at the supermarket... well, I'm the one doing the shopping anyway, so they have no choice, lol! Then again, my sister is really weird about that stuff... like if I told her it didn't come from the supermarket she probably wouldn't eat them.... thinking that they're not as 'clean' or whatever.... sisters, eh!

I just received RSPCA's annual report, which I've had a quick flick through and was interested to see their sponsors page included "Aussie Farmers Direct": http://www.aussiefarmers.com.au/VIC/meat.php?s=6

I know the RSPCA in no way promote vegetarianism, but they do seem to be claiming to endorse free range animal products through their "paw of approval" scheme, albeit tenuously.

I can't find any reference to the products on Aussie Farmers Direct as being free range.

Am I going too far in feeling this would be akin to the Anti-Cancer Council receiving sponsorship from a tobacco company, or the National Heart Foundation being sponsored by McDonald's (hmm, maybe they are!)?

I'm not "all for" RSPCA but i noticed not a single word was said when they did a HUGE puppy farm campaign which saw Billboards all over the city with ALV's picture of the abused dog plus countless bus stop posters. In that one campaign RSPCA gained more attention than all vegan AR groups combined (due to resources of course)
They are a government organisation so i dont know why people expect them to share their ideals of a vegan world. And yes, RSPCA do care about factory animals, sow stalls, live export. They have pictures of them all over their web page, I just dont agree with how they promote free range as a solution.

I'll say straight off the bat that I work for at the RSPCA and therefore my comments are biased. But I like the majority of you, I am vegan, and care A LOT about the plight of factory farmed animals.

The RSPCA has formerly tried running vegetarian 'sausage' sizzles and unfortunately it just doesn't make the same sort of money. We have to acknowledge that the RSPCA is NOT a veg*n organisation, and they're going to sell what's economically viable. They're a charity and ultimately want (read: need) to make money. They're also simply a product of their main customers -- people who go to the shelter just want a companion animal, the vast majority aren't veg*n. Being a vegan, it is kind of disappointing, but you need to see it from their perspective too.

Exactly. Being a government organisation (however they are barely funded by the govt) means they're not going to come out and isolate the huge majority of Australia (meat eaters).
They do what they can for animal WELFARE, but don't focus on animal rights. I did (still do) think that they should do more for farm animals, but all of their resources are required for what they do now (and they do A LOT of great for companion animals). If they redirected these resources to the meat industry, they would have to abolish what they do for companion animals and I still don't think they'd be able to CHANGE how things are being done.

That's just my two cents.

Culling kangaroos is totally different to a couple of shitty kids beating one to death. RSPCA reacted the way they did because those kids caused severe suffering to an animal, which is different to humanely(we hope) culling that animal.
P.S. i don't support culls
