for melbourne posters, here's a site that a lot of you may be interested in. has a list of doctors, naturopaths, dentists etc who are recommended due to being vege/vegan friendly (but not necessarily veg/vegan themselves). Im booked in with Dr Rose next week for my first check up as a vegan!

when my wife and I went and saw my wife's doctor (since childhood) about the pregnancy and us being vegan, she asked a few questions on nutrition but ceased asking once it was clear that we knew our stuff very well.

A couple of weeks later we went to again to see a gp but ended up being with another doctor. When she briefly left the room to get something, we saw my wife's file on screen. It was a whole page worth of notes. What attracted our interest was that amongst the text of her file,  the word V E G A N was present in a font size 3 times larger than the rest... and in red. We had a giggle after that.

My mum works at a hospital. I let her borrow my copy of The China Study.
A week later I had an email forwarded on from my mum saying about how bad/dangerous a vegan diet is. It was written by my mum's Nutritionist colleague.

Sigh. So anyone who goes to see her will get a dose of "Meat and two veg is the healthiest option, end of story"

We live in Australia!
GP's bulk bill everywhere but in The ACT and in The ACT if you're with Centrelink it's bulk billed.
GP's are free in our country!
hate to tell you but they aren't all free.yes some bulk bill, but you still need to pay a gap, unless on a health care card, then its my taxes that pay for you. some docs these days only bulk bill during certain hours too, usually work hours...

I couldn't care less what my doc says about my veganess, to be honest. I will, and have, told them this happy

Well, as it turned out, it was the first doctor, wife's usual doctor who wrote that, which seemed at odds to the reassuring nod and understanding she expressed when she talked to us about veganism.

We wanted to raise the issue, but thought 'meh, let the results speak for themselves'. And they did, quite convincingly.

Understanding reassuring nod = "I give up, there's just no way to convince these loonies"  funny

I'd be interested to hear your experiences as a parent raising a vegan child. We have had a thread on it before but I can't find it. Most people I discuss it with say that they do not want to impose their will on their child, and will be happy for the child to make their own decision when old enough. I always ask, are the not imposing their will on the child by feeding it meat and dairy anyway?

My brother is a vegetarian but his wife is not. They have decided to let their daughters decide when they are old enough, as they don't want the girls to find school and parties with friends difficult, and they fear them being teased and ostracised.

I saw my doctor a few weeks ago and informed her I was a vegetarian and that I wanted blood tests to see if everything is in order and she was fine! she said the main problem to worry about is iron and B12 as getting protein is easy for vegetarians if they eat well, and suggested that when I do go vegan that I take a b12 supplement. She is Shrilankan so thar might of helped too happy SHe didnt even write anything down which I was pleased about.
