Sarah-Maree, I'd reckon that's rare, for a parent to tell a kid straight-up that the animal will turn into steak, just after the kid's been looking at the baby animal, no BS there.

I had always cared a lot about animals, since I was a kid... My family was very into fishing and hunting, but I never was. My dad "banned" me from fishing because after I had reeled in a fish, I couldn't bear to slit its throat. I learnt to shoot, but he would refuse to take me out to get kangaroos, knowing I wouldn't be able to actually deal with it. In a way, him being a hunter was something that led me to veganism. He taught me that you respect the animals, if I couldn't kill them, I shouldn't hunt or fish for them. Of course, I took it further and thought if I can't kill this fish.. I shouldn't be eating a burger or a steak either, just because someone else killed it for me. Then in high school I saw Food Inc. and immediately stopped eating animal products, but after about two years I became very ill and had to give it up. I hated that time, but I have since gone back to veganism and have been loving it. It's been about a year and a half this time! Loving it and never going back.

There was a horrible, horrible video my partner accidentally clicked on that was a bunch of people throwing food to a pig in hopes that a crocodile would eat him. He started screaming when the croc got him and I started crying.

After that I went onto netflix and watched every food documentary I could find, and I could not stop thinking about that poor piggy, how was I any better than those wretched murderers when I myself was perpetuating the murder?

I was never a big meat eater previously and I haven't drank milk for years, so the transition for me has not been very hard so far. I feel better already and it's only been over a week. I'm helping myself, the environment, the poor and the economy. It's win-win!

My lightbulb moment was seeing a video of the baby male chicks been ground up alive.... That was it for me. I went vegan straight away. No way could I support such a cruel industry.
