Well, in grade 8, we were forced to watch our science teacher disect a sheep's inards. He is a total twit who doesn't know anything (while disecting the lungs for another class, he blew into them while they were still half frozen and they exploded and covered the class). He was treating it like crap and being really disrespectful. I've always been a lover of animals and that really made me think. Basically I realised how disrespectful and cruel people can be to animals, living or dead. I never really ate meat beforehand (I hated the taste of it - I ate it because that was how I was brought up) so I went vegetarian. I was vegetarian for about a month, until I came across a site like this (it was probably Peta or something) and after seeing the videos and reading about it, I decided that I was going to make my life animal cruelty free. And I plan on keeping it that way (I've been a strict vegan for about 3 or so years now).

I always thought I could support animal activism and still eat meat. Then PETA sent me a copy of their documentary "Meet your Meat". Amazingly sad, and a real eye opener. Definitely worth a watch for anyone considering vegetarianism or veganism.

My light bulb moment was when i was on work experience at animal liberation and i saw an advertisement that showed a bobby  calve happy and healthy at day three  of his life and as a pack of meat at day six. Being able to visualise the connection between meat and probably the cutest cow i have i ever seen i knew i could no longer promote and endorse this cruel practice by eating meat.

My vegan one just sort of happened one day. I bought a super awesome Vegan cookbook called 'Now Vegan' (highly recommended), and I was just reading the introduction. I just said to myself, cool I will just be vegan.
Such a great Aussie vegan cookbook!

My lightbulb moment was in 2006. I found out that the Body Shop was sold to L'Oreal and knew I would no longer shop there so I hopped online to find alternative cruelty free products. As I was searching I found websites about going vegetarian or vegan. As I read through their reasons I knew I couldn't ignore them. I considered just going vegetarian but I knew that wasn't enough, so over a week I went from omni to vegan.

It's one of the best decisions I've ever made happy
Mandee! Is that you? ;P

I was about three years old when my neighbour killed a lamb in the backyard. Now this wasn't in some agricultural area but quiet suburbia. Yer, I was kinda grossed out; never touched meat again. Eventually I made the change to vegan as well. Never turning back ecstatic

Try being a 12 year old kid that had loved animals for all your life and didn't really like the fact about eating them in the first place, when your dad starts making animal noises whenever you ate them. That's what made me go vegetarian.
After 8 years of that I'm now a vegan after reading about how the calves from dairy cows are sent to get murdered, and how most free range chickens are killed when production levels decrease.

I read 'Animal Liberation' by Peter Singer and because vegeterian instantly!!!  I was horrified at what animals go through to produce a completely unnecessary product.  I have a beautiful dog and wouldn't want him to suffer so why should I be complacent in the suffering of other animals.  Then I did some more research into eggs and milk and discovered that just as much suffering is involved in their production so I went vegan.  And like you Matty, I've been vegan now for just over a year and would NEVER go back.  I'm not tempted by chocolate or anything.  I guess I do miss cheese and it makes me so mad that even soy cheese has milk product in it!  But the cruelty free parmesan cheese you can get from the online cruelty free shop makes up for it.

Me too! My lightbulb moment was during an ethics class at uni when I had to read an article by Peter Singer. Has everyone read his work? 'The Ethics of What We Eat' is a fabulous book

Did you know that Peter Singer was one of the founders of Animals Australia?  thumb
