Vitamin B12

I'm curious about you!

Heya!
Since so many of us are veg*ns on here I thought I'd do a pole regarding vitamin B12. So what I'd like to know is....

1. Do you take a vitamin B12 supplement?
2. If so how many micrograms and how often?
3. Have you ever had your vitamin B12 tested?
4. If so what was the result?
5. Do you intentionally eat vitamin B12 fortified foods?

Thanks.

My answers are:

1. Yes.
2. Daily 2000 micrograms.
3. Yes, every 6 months.
4. Normally between 600-700 (above 157 is fine)
5. Yes.

1. Not yet, but I am worried about it so I want to start. Had a look and damn they are expensive so I want to find the RIGHT one. Also want to wait til my blood test results to see if I need anything else supplemented.

3. Not yet. I plan on getting a blood test in the new year to check up on it and also anything else I may be lacking. I've been veg for nearly a year now, figure it is time. Pity i'm terrified of needles and have had bad experiences with them TRYING to draw blood tongue

5. I make sure I have soy milk with b12 in it and sometimes eat fortified foods, but haven't made it a regular meal plan

LOL. I'm horrendously bad with needles myself. My body goes into shock and I pass out (bad childhood experience with needles).
The supplements really aren't that expensive. $20 should be able to get you a bottle of vegan sublingual B12 from any health food store that'll last around 3 months.

Ouch, yea you win on the needle fear!! Good on you for going so regularly then.
20 bucks is good, the ones I were looking at ranged from $30-80 tongue But I didn't spend much time looking I must admit. I don't think i'll take them daily anyway, unless my levels indicate I need to. Though that can be misleading. I reaaaaally hate this b12 issue!!

Yes I take a B complex once a day

There's 5mg in the daily tablets. I also sometimes eat fortified foods  but not incessantly
3. Have you ever had your vitamin B12 tested?
Yes
4. If so what was the result?
At my first test about 6 months after being vegan my B12 was borderline, with supplementation it is now normal.
5. Do you intentionally eat vitamin B12 fortified foods?
Nope, not really. My soymilk is Bonsoy and as far as I know that's B12 free  sad

1. I get B12 injections
2. 1 mg in 1 ml, every 3 months
3. I try to have blood tests every 6 months, to check everything including B12
4. Before starting injections I was deficient, now my levels are all good

I take a Nature's Own oral tablet

2. If so how many micrograms and how often?
I take one a day but not sure of how many micrograms per tablet I think its only 250.

3. Have you ever had your vitamin B12 tested?
I have a pathology slip in my handbag, but haven't gotten around to going just yet - I'm not afraid of blood tests as I have had them quite regularly since early childhood..

Yes - If there is a B12 enriched version of what I'm buying I will always opt for that one.


P.S I don't even know if there is any point in me taking the B12 tablets because I've heard that they don't absorb properly or something, however I bought the bottle prior to learning this so once I have my results back and the jar is finished I will probably switch to the injections if my results reflect a deficiency..

3. only ever had one general blood test
4. everything normal
5. yes, fortified soy milk
