Also if you ask some of the members on this forum they have vegan cats living fine and healthy but if i thought they couldn't be vegan i personally would just not have a cat it's hard to justify over 100's of animals to be factory killed for a cat that couldn't possibly kill them otherwise (cows etc) considering cats are domesticated animals neither is technically natural, their has been research into the nutritional amounts to make products like vegan-pet cat and dog food and from the feedback I've heard they have been successful and have the animals living as long or even longer because of their decrease of problems from the factory farmed animals(hormones, anti-bitotics, terrible feed etc). Once again of the top of my mind "BreadmanInAus" has vegan cats living find, ask him how he's going with them.
I personally am a bit peeved at vegans feeding animals meet because i personally have chickens and find it disgusting that poor little chickens and of course other animals will have to die for peoples pets, i really would like people to either not have cats or dogs or have them vegan because knowing they die because of vegans saddens me and even if someone was of that opinion their are plenty of fully natural herbivorous to save.
I think you should at least try phasing them onto a vegan diet and see how they go a few weeks Isn't going to do full time damage and plenty of others have found successes ask some of them for help.
For starters, all of my animals are fed organic (pasture fed) and free range meats that don't have the factory farmed hormones you speak of. I can assure you that my selection of meat for my animals was an extensive process. I've studied the vegan diets for cats and dogs, however I also studied the anatomy of my pets, and there is indisputable evidence that cats are obligated carnivores. Specifically an essential amino-acid Taurine only found in meat products that cannot be substituted in a vegan cat diet, or at least not sufficiently to my standards. I can understand that vegans who cook meat, sourced from factory farms would be hypocritical, but I have taken the utmost care in making sure the products my boys eat are humane.
I foster cats and dogs from rescue groups and I have a responsibility to fulfill their need for a nutritional, healthy, natural diet. Of course, its always dependant on the owners opinion and moral interpretation. I at least try to support a system where these animals can live a happy life, and where it reflects the standard of animal lovers.
You could sit there and have an abolitionist approach to the subject and deny your pet meat, but personally, I can't be blamed for the circumstances, humans domesticated cats and dogs who are, obligated carnivores and omnivores, respectively. I have animals to ensure are healthy, and so long as the bird that died for my pets meal had a happy life and was killed humanely, I have no choice but to compromise.
It sounds harsh, especially on a animal-loving forum, but it is, what it is.
