Pescetarians -- "vegetarians" who eat .. err... fish.. right?

Well, there's an easy answer to this question: fish aren't vegetables .. they have eyes... and parents!!

That said, I'll admit that when I first went veg I ate fish for about 6 months and called myself a 'vegetarian'. Not knowing any other vegetarians at the time, I thought it was OK to think that (and was convinced by my parents that I 'needed' fish -- rubbish!).

But since then I've learned a LOT about fish, and I also learned that it's a lie to think that fish don't suffer (and that commercial fishing can in any way be 'sustainable'). So, I'm happy to say that I'm now a 'real' (?) vegetarian.

When I first went veg I was still eating fish for a while. I had convince myself that I needed the iron and protein that only fish could provide me, until I grew up a bit and realised that multi-vitamins are just as good.

People think they need at least a little meat to survive. NOT TRUE! Do a bit of research and you'll soon learn otherwise.

Not to mention that fish can be loaded with contaminants these days too... sad

To avoid the heavy metals, mercury, etc, you can try these great sources of non-fish Omega 3: Walnuts, Flax Seeds (or linseeds), Tofu happy

Fish are better left in the sea where they belong!

I agree...about the whole not needing fish thing that is.
When I first went veggo I ate fish though, but then I went to a vegan expo and was completely changed! haha, no more fish for me after that!

But in answer to your question, no, piscetarians aren't real vegetarians. Only eating fish still saves the lives of many animals but I don't think it's right for them to be called vegetarians, they have different definitions.

I always find it funny when I tell someone I'm a vegetarian and they ask if I still eat fish... like they are just floating vegetables huh

Well, I eat fish and call myself vegetarian. I know I'm not a 'real' vegetarian because I do, but I am a lot more veg than a lot of people. And I don't eat it that often, either.

Well... 'real', or 'not real', I think anyone who is making an effort to reduce animal cruelty by severely reducing or cutting out meat is doing a good thing happy Every step counts, shouldn't be undervalued and every step means a lot to the animals!

As I said, I used to eat fish and call myself 'vegetarian' too.. But as an ex-pescetarian, I recommend learning more about fish, who are so often forgotten animals sad, and trying to replace fish meals with other foods high in omega3 and other nutrients (or try faux fish from a chinese supermarket.... uncanny!!!)
