I wouldn't work at a supermarket mainly for that reason, I wouldn't want to handle meat, and to see all the meat that goes through the cash registers, I'd be disgusted.
It is disgusting.. In an area like Western Sydney, you dont get alot of tofu or vegie delights coming through.
Oh, how I'd love for there to be more people who don't eat meat. >_<
I work at a certain supermarket that sells meat products. We'll call it Culls Supermarket for now..
I'm a vegetarian, so naturally working in such an environment poses a bit of a problem. I have to handle meat every day at work, most of the customers buy some sort of animal derived product (by most I mean 99.9% roughly). I often end up with blood crusted into the cracks of my palm after a shift, and this is quite disturbing.
Does anyone else have a similar problem with their job? Do you find that handling meat in an environment where you're told to be nice to every customer is excruciatingly difficult? I have to put on a cheery, encouraging smile when a customer comments on the quality of their purchase and it's quite a bummer.
"Aw yearh that's some GOOD LAMB AYE MATE"
" Mhmm!.."
And the BBQ Chickens. They leave a slick of grease on the counter that I then have to scrub off. But there's rent to pay and mouths to feed, it's a dilemma.
I work in a supermarket too on checkouts. Usually I can manage fine, if there is blood I wipe it off and use copious amounts of hand sanitiser (we keep this on every register). The worst experiences I've had are when the meat department is selling half pig's heads (I can't bear to look at them, the sightless eyes are too much for me, I don't know how anyone can buy them though I respect the philosophy of using every part of the animal if it had to die for us) and whole rabbits. I've never had an issue talking about being vegetarian while working, I often ask customers about new vego products to see if they're any good. But i think IGA is probably more lenient than coles and woolies about the staff

I also work with meat. I work in a deli department in a supermarket so am handling meat all day long. The hams are so processed that they don't look like any sort of animal, it's mainly the chicken and fish section which is gross. Have worked in a supermarket and deli for so long though it's just something I've gotten used to. Trying to switch departments to bakery though, much less meat in there!
You're not alone!
I'm a cashier & vegetarian [going vegan soon, I hope] and also have to handle meat, some way or another. Often though, the meats that come through my way are badly wrapped and the liquids leak out and I just have to stop everything and clean it all up. I really don't like the thought of it going all over my hands
The job also pays well, but like you it doesn't sit well with my conscience.
I've already been considering a change of job for a while now, hopefully I can find somewhere that is a little more thoughtful of their products.
It's just unrealistic to expect you're never going to come into contact with meat. Especially when jobs can be really hard to come by these days. I quit my full time receptionist job because I started a new course, and finding casual or part time work is an absolute bitch. I bit the bullet last week and started applying at places like Charcoal Chicken & fish and chip shops. I know I can distance myself from the "used to be an animal" side of meat, I suppose I'm lucky in that respect. I don't think it's wrong for a vegan to work with meat, because if you weren't doing it, someone else would be. At least if you're doing it you can suggest the veg option and encourage "less" cruel purchases, etc.

This sums it up perfectly.
I love making coffee (most of the time) and being a barista for some extra cash is fun for me. Yeah, it's a pity that I'm working with (dairy) milk most of the time but what can you do? Choosing not to have an income because it's animal products may be ethical but it sure isn't practical.

I used to work at Woolworths- in the deli department. And it sounds like you work in a similar role. It was DISGUSTING. It's what helped me turn vegeterian to begin with I worked with 2 vego's aswell, and they hated it. When id slice ham, i felt like i might aswell have gone up to a pig and just put an axe to it's throat
