Heyo everyone!

after going to my Aunties yesterday, we walked past an RSPCA animal shelter. Inside you could here the baying of lonely dogs and the mewing of abandoned kittens. My heart went out to every one of those poor things looked inside cages. And so I got thinking.

Animal shelters can be, wait no scratch that, are REALLY depressing places. If you have visited one, you would know. If you haven't then let me describe my experience.

I remember the eyes mostly. Those dark pitiful eyes that stared up at me from those bare cement cages. I remember the occasional rattle of the cage when a joyful dog jumped up at the sight of us. I never knew their fate, but most would have probably been put down.

It was sad and depressing, but it made me angry and fired up. Now I will do anything to help those poor little dears. My first act will be to help any animal shelters. My second will to raise awareness of those poor little dears. I will hand out flyers and speak about them continuously.

But heres what you can do!                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                  megaphone

Help out at any animal shelter. Please, do not think it is depressing, but think more for the animals in there. How depressing is it for them???

anything else you want to do, or have done, or are doing? leave your comments below... and remember to always help out!

I've always found animal shelters to be pretty well run, it's the council pounds that are gut wrenching.

although the kill rates are disgusting at LDH, RSPCA etc, the shelters seem to be run well.

Lort Smith is fantastic, Pets Haven, and rescue groups are great

it is the council pounds which are heartbreaking

I used to volunteer at Y.A.P.S in Cairns, they were great, all the animals were walked once a day minimum, on weekends there were lots of volunteers so some animals were walked 3-4 times happy and everyone had playtime!

I volunteer at a no kill shelter. I walk the dogs and pat and brush the cats if they want it.

I dont find it too depressing because they're not going to be killed and they're going to get a home. It's depressing when they come because they're people have died or something. They loose their people and then get taken to a big scary place sad

But the dog enclosures are quite nice as far as enclosures go and they have toys and play areas and they get proper walks about 3 times a week.

The cat enclosures on the other hand, I'd feel bad taking a cat home from there! I dont want to go home from there! They're so nice! ecstatic

I volunteer for my local Animal refuge - (they are no kill) but it's still a very sad place & we usually have a cry while we are there, especially when you see the reasons people have dumped the animals 'ie. plays too rough (has been said of a 6 month old kitten!), not enough room etc etc.
I agree get out there and volunteer at your local refuge, talk to your local council about adopting Animal Welfare Leagues Getting to Zero model (Zero euthanisia), raise awareness about responsible pet ownership & desexing etc!!!

Sadly our local shelter is not a nice place & there are never enough volunteers! Lots of sad, bored, lonely animals there, but we do what we can!

They've actually just put me & my boyfriend on the committee so we're now in a better position to make a real change in our local community- first meeting tomorrow night!

And no shelter is ever truly 100% no kill.. the no kill policy only applies for sociable & 'treatable' animals sad

Not to mention how many animals the no kill shelters have to turn away because they are mostly running at capacity!

I believe the real problem is due to lack of local laws, the government need to set the standard higher for backyard breeding/puppy mills/irresponsbile pet owners etc

If you breed your dog or cat, whether they are purebred or whatever! you are contributing to the hundreds of thousands of dogs & cats being euthanised every year in Australia.

I hate pedigree, but I really love their adoption drive ads, take a look, be prepared to cry!

And then those animals are sent to the RSPCA who have no choice in the matter sad Animal shelters get little to no money from the govt, even the head office in Sydney is almost having to close its doors because its just so expensive
