They may be sad, but we need to help.

although the kill rates are disgusting at LDH, RSPCA etc, the shelters seem to be run well.

Lort Smith is fantastic, Pets Haven, and rescue groups are great

it is the council pounds which are heartbreaking
You clearly don't know much about Pets Haven happy
Our local pound is soon integrating with our local refuge, not sure if this will be a good or bad thing ie. refuge animals more likely to be euthanised or pound animals less likely?

Hopefully it means that the pound animals are more likely to be rehomed. Some councils do already use refuges when the pounds are full (I know Pets Haven has been used as such).

I hope so, it will be hard knowing animals are being put down on site though sad

The Hobart Cat Centre are an awesome shelter. It's really colourful. They don't cram their cats into small uncomfortable cages, they have two big rooms full of cat toys, scratching posts, etc, so the cats can do whatever they want! I'm not sure about their kill rate, I know I've heard of them keeping cats for over a year.

So, they're probably as far from 'depressing shelter' as you can possibly get!

There are videos of people who euthanise the dogs... the sadness in the people's eyes, they don't want to do it. They state they don't want to do it, but they believe they have no choice, it's horrendously depressing.

I volunteer at a no kill shelter. I walk the dogs and pat and brush the cats if they want it.

I dont find it too depressing because they're not going to be killed and they're going to get a home. It's depressing when they come because they're people have died or something. They loose their people and then get taken to a big scary place sad

But the dog enclosures are quite nice as far as enclosures go and they have toys and play areas and they get proper walks about 3 times a week.

The cat enclosures on the other hand, I'd feel bad taking a cat home from there! I dont want to go home from there! They're so nice! ecstatic
where is this shelter? I have heard rumours about one in Handorf, but hadn't had it guaranteed?
