Should we also stop breeding humans because 1 out of 10 becomes a rapist/murderer/burglar/general asshole???

It all depends on how the animal is raised. Treat something like shit it become a little shit... treat something like it's the only thing that matters and it will hang off your every word.

I have a soft spot for Pitties. I've never had one, but I would never walk past one in the pound just because it is what it is.

Matt, OMG someone with sense, you are speaking my words.  I have worked with shelter dogs for a long time now, it is so true, there are so many dogs being put down that need homes, when these greedy breeders just breed more. There are so many beautiful dogs just waiting for someone to take them home and love them. Unfortunately some people feel the need to keep these breeders in business by wanting adolescent pure breeds, therefore adding to the problem. Anyway, I have found many a young purebreed at the pounds too. Just for the record, the councils are very strict on pit bull adoption, they rarely allow it. You have to have a yard like fort knox to be allowed to even reclaim your own dog should it be picked up by the pound. These dogs have been officially outlawed. I do believe its illegal to even sell them. kathy

We don't necessarily 'breed'  humans however. There aren't businesses (as far as I know anyway) that breed humans and sell them to people to own. Breeding domestic animals can't be compared to humans giving birth. I'm not saying dogs and cats shouldn't be allowed to mate and give birth naturally - it's just a shame that we have such a problem with homeless animals and this can't happen.

It doesn't matter how the animal is raised - countless animals are killed  because nobody wants them, nobody should have to live as an unwanted person, dogs and cats shouldn't have to either. When you buy a cat/dog you are contributing to the overpopulation of cats/dogs and not giving a home to animal who would most likely otherwise die, or be tested on.

Pitbulls are actually one of the most gentle breeds of dogs. People just assume that they are "dangerous" because from a distance they have a striking resemblance to (forgot the breeds name) which has quite an agressive nature.

But these agressive characters are only because they were provoked by humans.
A dog bites a child.
The dog gets "destroyed"
Has anyone even stopped to realise that maybe the child provoked the attack. If someone pulled on your ears & hair, of course you wouldnt like it.

Think about it this way: humans have 'domesticated' dogs. Their current lifestyle as 'pets' is far, far away from their natural habitat and living conditions. But when they express otherwise natural behaviour, we get angry. For instance, my dad cracks it when Charlie digs up holes in the garden or goes into unstoppable howling rampages. He claims that charlie "doesnt understand", but could it really be the other way around?

I don't think Matt and I are saying stop breeding for this reason. At least I am against 'pet' ownership as an institution.

They are our property, they are totally dependent on us, people don't havef the time or the committment (in most cases) to really give them a good life and then there are a all the problems with strays etc. They are commodities, bought and sold and destroyed or made just like a watch or a car or a tv.

A friend of mine recently asked her mother who had just bought a new expensive car whether she would rather their cat/dog die or the car get totalled... guess the answer.

We've tried having 'pets', it doesn't work. The whole institution is causing a lot of pain.

But, obviously, we still ought to look after the animals arouind now and give them the best life we can.
