A friend recently mentioned this to me, so I thought it was worth sharing.

It hasn't gotten much news coverage; I found ONE news article.

News article:   http://www.proprint.com.au/News/247385,conflict-between-wilderness-society-and-australian-paper-hits-cyberspace.aspx

Have you actually looked into where AP get their pulp from? ALL nature societies/greenies believe that pulp (in Australia) comes from old growth forest. Yes once upon a time old growth forest was no doubt cleared to make way for the new plantations.... but now it is all plantation.

The cheap and nasty office paper you can get from the supermarkets comes from Indonesia and THAT uses old growth. It actually takes pulp from orangutan habitats.

I used to work for Australia Paper and sold paper for 2 and half years, so I do know what I am talking about.

If there is a FSC or PEFC certification on the paper it does not come from old growth. There are strict guidelines that need to be adhered too. Go to here for more: http://www.pefc.org/ & http://www.fscaustralia.org/

"The paper company also said that it sources more than half of its total fibre requirements from plantation wood, recycled pulp and wastepaper from kerbside collections"

does that mean the other half is native forest?

As far as I know most native forests that are destroyed in Victoria are sold to Japan who make paper out of it.

Reflex are white supremacists tongue

No. AP also source pulp from Brazil, NZ, Canada and Chile.

But that wouldn't be AP (Reflex) doing it.....

I assume AP stands for Australian paper
yet they source from Brazil, NZ, Canada and Chile?

I'm think I'm going with TWS on this one.
If reflex is'nt using native forests then they better clear this all  up and the boycott will stop.

There isn't enough pulp in Aust to keep up with demand, so yes they source globally. Just as some of our pulp goes elsewhere. The paper is just made in Australia, not the pulp wink

http://www.reflex.com.au/Responsible-Fibre-Sourcing/ another site that I don't think I posted earlier. You may think this is all just words, but when you use certain certifications the repercussions of misuse wouldn't even make it worth it.

I'm glad to be proven wrong about things and it's my own fault for not seeking out the other side of the debate happy.

Apparently they do use native forest timber. They say it's the leftovers from other companies/industries making furniture, building materials and the like who use a bit less than 7,800 hectares of native forest each year, which is replanted.

While they aren't the primary users of the native forest and are just using the waste, they are technically still using native forest timber, hence why the confusion has arisen?

On a bit of a tangent, I guess that alternatives to buying new paper could be to buy recycled paper.  Apparently there are a few brands that create paper that is made out of 100% post consumer waste and isn't rebleached.
