Hmmm, is it true that only 'reject' flat-race horses are used for jumps racing? If it is, that's really, really interesting.

I'm all for an end to animal exploitation -- from flesh to milk to testing to entertainment -- but if it is true that only 'reject' horses are used -- therefore no horses are actually bred especially for jumps racing -- is it right to protest only against jumps racing?* I mean, are we doing the right thing if the horses that would become jumps racing horses are, without jumps racing, going to be sent to the slaughterhouse?

Can someone clear this up for me?

*I realise the Coalition for the Protection of Race Horses campaigns for an end to all horse racing.

And by the way guys...

We shouldn't jump down everyone’s throat for being for something we're not. We live in a democracy. Everyone’s entitled to their own opinion - even the person who made this video. I think the comments commented onto this particular video are pretty childish. I don't think it’s right to call anyone a "fat whore."
seems to me she was looking for attention, hence why i didnt comment her or anything. im happy to bitch about it here with other angry people.

ive heard that once a horse has had its run and is no longer good for use theyre sold to pet food companies..

yeah, i dont think the fat whore comment was appropriate, i doubt the person commenting personally knows if shes a whore or fat..
thing is, its freedom of speech, if she is going to have her say publicly then so will others. You cant put a video up with an opinion and not expect to be challenged.
Yeh, I have no problem at all with people discussing her comments and information she gave -- I just don't like the personal attacks. I think the 'fat whore' comment came from here - the names match anyway.

So, again, does anyone know if horses are bred specially for jumps racing?

Soooo... basically she's saying she supports horses dieing.... lovely.

You have a good point Matt. I would also be interested to know if jumps horses are just horses that aren't any good at running around an oval, or are trained.

I know in my neighbourhood there are several agistments and they all have arenas which I see them prancing the horses around every afternoon. Sometimes they are doing the prancy dancy stuff (sorry can't remember what it's called lol) and other times they are jumping. They don't look like race horses cos I don't think race horses would be in small agistment centers in the hills... so maybe some people train them to jump?

But I would also like to know if anyone knows anything further. It's still wrong regardless though!!

Hrm just found something sort of alarming...

www.ballarat.edu.au/vfed/course_finder/sbs/VBN118.doc

It's part of a uni course!! Sorry I know it's not much but it's something.

I googled "training a horse for jumps racing" and that's the only thing I could see on the first page that didn't have anything to do with the negativity about it all. That's a good thing I think!

I think, from my horse riding history (which I did when I was 7), there is like.. show (?) and then there is jumps racing.

Show is jumping horses over a few obstacles and getting scored for form (like you see in the olympics).

Jumps racing is a race -- going as fast as possible into jumps.

Both are cases of animal exploitation, but jumps racing is far worse than 'show'.

... and then there is the steeple chase/cross counrty (?). It's also very dangerous - going at speed into jumps but landing in rivers and stuff. I think though it is marginally safer than jumps racing.

Correct me if I'm wrong on any of this. happy

yeah its called show jumping ... Its an olympic event,  by its self, or in the 3 day event. 3 day event is show jumping, cross country and dressage (that prancy dancey thing raven mentioned.)

in show jumping they use older horses, (when i say older, i mean like there not 3 like race horses.) and they tend to use breeds that excell at jumping (warmbloods, hanoverians, oldenburgs ect) . Training for these horses can take years.

i wouldnt compare steeple chasing with cross country though. Like there just so different. Once again these horses spend years being train, so when they get to eventing stage their ready. Its much easier for the horse to concentrate on the jump when he's not surrounded by 20 other terrified horses.

What are your thoughts on harness racing?? i think thats way crueller then eventing.
