Vegetarians barred from adopting

Because of the risk they might force their eating habits on their child.

it's like saying raising a child without cigarettes is deprivation because a lot of people smoke

If I were ever to have kids, I'd adopt. But I suppose I couldn't since I'm vegan.  rolleyes
If I were that couple, I'd be fighting tooth and nail to change that.

Im not vegan or vegetarian as of yet, but i still dont agree with this! How can this happen? As long as the food is healthy and contains all the nutrients and vitatmins we need then whats the deal??

Just over a peice of meat?? They could be the most moral people who will take care of every single thing the child needs (safety, health, education, stability, a home) but this dosnt matter cause of some damn meat? I really just dont understand the world we live in..

This was posted on Food Inc's Facebook today and apparently
1) they are vegan, not vegetarian
http://www.takepart.com/news/2011/03/11/oh-youre-vegan-you-cant-adopt-in-crete
2) In crete, they don't have the normal available supplementation for vegans because it's a small island- according to someone who commented on the link.

I believe they were vegetarian -- that article says vegan but the two articles it links to and refers to  as its source say vegetarian (as do all other articles about it). However, even if they were vegan, I don't think it should have made a difference. I disagree with the fact that a vegetarian diet is necessarily healthier than a meat diet... It does depend on what someone eats... But I'm sick of meat eaters saying that vegetarian diets can't be at all healthy sad That's not the case at all. I've heard people saying that children who don't eat meat will have underdeveloped brains. COMPLETELY untrue.

So it's ok to force kids to eat meat and dairy and push beliefs on them but not the other way around. With all the medical probs and obesity in the world you think they would come to sense.

What a joke!

Sounds quite discriminating enough and really unfair. I understand that for couples trying to adopt that the adopting agencies and whatnot can be selective, but that's just stepping the line.

As far as I'm concerned, if you regularily check up with a nutritionist and doctor JUST to be safe, what's wrong with it?
It has been proven in some cases to be a healthier diet than eating meat,
I would love to see them try and take the vegan parents on this forum's rights to have kids and bring them up vegan...
my two middle fingers seem to be inconspicuously raising towards that particular article.... confused

One of those comments was truly infuriating and insulting:

"Deciding to cut out a nutritionally beneficial part of your diet because of childish adherence to a "bunnies are cute" mentality is a choice."

I wouldnt even have words to reply to a comment like that; that person is obviously ignorant, discriminatory and callous beyond all words. Rage-out!
