Location: Brisbane Square, Brisbane
(In the city between the Library & Casino -- top of the mall - near those big steel ball things!)
Time: 11:30 - 14:30, Saturday 9 April 2011

This protest previously went ahead last month, but due to rain, it was a much scaled down version. Seeming as we have all the banners and leaflets and everything already done we decided to give it another shot next weekend. Hoping for better weather this time and hope you can make it along!

This is a non-violent protest, and to abide by the permit rules, we need to be on our best behaviour, as we will be in a high density public area, with many children around.

On the day:
* we need some volunteers to be seals
* volunteers to be clubber(s)
* people to hand out leaflets
* people to collect signatures for the petition against the Canadian seal hunt and also for the Letters to be sent to Hatem Yavuz, who is the Turkish Australia responsible for the Namibian cull.

We encourage people to bring their own banners (please remember they need to be either material or cardboard, as under the permit, no hard banners are allowed), common seal banner slogans : "stop the massacre", "stop the seal slaughter", "save the seals".

General Info:

Countries that participate in seal culling: Canada, Greenland, Namibia, Norway and Russia

Main Countries that purchase seal products: China, Hong Kong, Germany, Greenland, Finland, Denmark, France, Greece, South Korea, Russia. (Asia being the primary importer of seal meat)

Parts of seal used and exported to various countries (meat is rarely harvested from the seals, primarily pelts): fur, meat, oil, flippers and organs.

The Canadian Department of Fisheries and Oceans quota’s in recent years:
YEAR QUOTA KILLED
2007: 270,000 82,800
2008: 275,000 217,800
2009: 280,000 72,400
2010: 330,000 67,000

Namibian Culls: exact numbers of seals killed is unknown, as estimates vary and the final figures aren't confirmed.

Annual Quotas in recent years:
2007: 80,000 pups 6,000 bulls
2008: 80,000 pups 6,000 bulls
2009: 85,000 pups 7,000 bulls
2010: 85,000 pups 7,000 bulls

Hi All!
Please note change of time - protest is now at 12pm (until 2.30pm)
This is so that people can first attend the Climate Rally in King George Square (11am-12pm), and then come to the Seal Protest afterwards.
Hoping for good weather &  to see you there!

I'll be leafletting tomorrow at King George Square from 10:30am (for the 11am climate rally) if anyone wants to join me.  I have 300-400 each of "Eating up the world" and "Think you can be a meat-eating environmentalist...? think agiain!" leaflets so no need to bring any (unless you have some of course)
