This has to be the most confusing post I have ever read,  Derek.

You state that you 'love animals' yet think it's ok to eat them because they 'taste real good'.
There's some pretty serious issues in that alone.

But then you go on to say we should do someting about the baby male chicks who suffer (as do all birds involved) because of people's desire to consume the menstrual fluid of a chicken.

I'd like to you to really think about why it is you care about these birds when you seem to think it's perfectly fine to torture and buticher and eat their kin?

Finally, I'd also like to know why you think people not eating eggs at all would make no difference. Do you think this would be happening if people weren't buying eggs?
people try to stop the guilt, make themselves feel not responsible by saying they love and care about animals?

What makes you think that if people continue buying cruelly farmed eggs, companies such as Pace Farms will look to reform the egg industry? I mean, do you honestly think that if Animals Australia approach them, and asked really nicely to stop being so cruel, they would just go "oh, since you've been so nice about it, sure we'll do it!"

If people don't continue buying eggs and other animal products we will see the ultimate and absolute reform of agribusiness; animal liberation.

People stopped using human slaves, why don't you have faith in humanity that one day we'll abandon non-human slaves? I reckon we definitely have history on our side on this one.

If you're looking into veganism, we'd all be very happy to help. One thing you can count on is that everyone on here will bend-over-backwards for the animals, your health and the planet.

I just have to say that if they decided to sell male chicks as pets, each home could only take one as roosters will usually fight to the death for claim to their territory and/or hens in the area.
having a dozen roosters in one area would create a giant cock fight. a whole other animal cruelty issue.

its completely out of logistics.

I got the recent email about "The Egg industrys dirty secret". It made me make the change from vegetarian to vegan. I hadn't really even thought about going vegan before this.

Wish there was something we could do to actually make more of a difference.

There is lots you can do!

If you get in touch with Animals Australia, or Animal Liberation Victoria, they'll point you in the right direction.

Things range from handing out leaflets in busy places to people informing them of animal cruelty (which I'm doing tomorrow), to taking direct action. If you really want to make a difference for animals, and want to know how, I really reccommend buying the book "Striking at the Roots - A Practical Guide to Animal Activism." It lists everything you can possibly do for animals, what to do and how to do it.

Here's a link for the book: http://www.edgarsmission.org.au/Merchandise.htm#books

Good luck!

well personally, im not so sure how well chickens will do as pets.

People will be the same if not worse with them as they are with dogs an cats. they wont understand the kidn of care they will need and im sure this will end up in simply chucking them out as well as handing them over to the rspca.

I think the solution is to not produce so many chickens in the first place..

the less that people support that industry, the less chickens will need to be born. So im pretty sure being vegan will help..
I honestly dont think selling chicks as pets will work to well.

And why should those bastards at places like that get more money??
I have pet chickens, and I have to agree with you. My chooks rule the backyard, but they're the exception to the rule.
If chooks are encouraged as pets, it might reduce the number of battery farms around, but you're right, people won't look after them. They'll forget to feed them or fill their water bowls, or won't clean out the coops properly. My friend's little brother bought chickens last year, and forgot to feed them for 2 weeks, so they all died.

Also, it won't solve the issue of male chicks being killed, because roosters are illegal in urban and suburban areas (it depends on your council), and most people won't want more than one rooster. So, they'll still be killed as byproducts. Also, as replacement for factory farmed meat, it would be nearly impossible to regulate the slaughter of the chickens in backyards, by untrained people, and possibly with cruel methods.

Boycott is the only plausible solution.
