Hi Lillian,
Congratulations! It's always exciting to hear about people who decide to help animals by not eating them happy

This page has some good tips for speaking to your parents: http://www.unleashed.org.au/features/veg-week/what-to-eat.php#tips

Many people on Unleashed have gone through the same thing. So I'm sure you'll find that others will have some helpful tips as well. The best advice I can offer is to simply show them you are serious - by doing some research into how to be healthy on a vegetarian diet; by offering to help with shopping and cooking; and by explaining to them why it is important to you.

Try to avoid getting into arguments with them about it, as they'll be more likely to come round to being supportive if it doesn't turn into a fight.

And stay strong... they may not be supportive at first, but stick with it and eventually they'll see how important this is to you wink

Yay another Tassie member!!!

I found that if I didn't shut up about something my parents would eventually give in and accept it. This worked with getting a kitten and going veg. tongue If I were you, I would do a lot of study regarding vegetarianism, including the health benefits, and I would study the negatives of eating meat, then talk about it flat out so your parents will understand how serious you are, and how much you want to go veg. happy

Personally (this may not be the best approach for you) but I would just do it. Refuse to eat meat, explain to your parents your feelings and that there are millions (I hope) of healthy vego's out there in the world. I would suggest to them to watch a documentary called 'Earthlings' - they might even join you!

Maybe in the beginning offer to cook some yummy vegetarian meals & fill yourself up with all the great information available to share with them (even refer them to this site) - google is your friend!

Good luck & glad to have you on board.

HEY! I have the same prob!

My suggestion is…eat more veggies and non-animal products. Then, stop talking about going veg to your parents, and then start saying that you don't like the meat, or you don't like the chocolate, or milk gives you a sore tummy, or that soy milk tastes "DELICIOUS!"

Start packing your own lunch, like carrot sticks, a sandwich of carrot and lettuce, anything else thats good and vegan!

Just go Vegan secretly, and pretend you don't like foods that are from animals!

I'm glad you added that last sentence because for a moment I imagined that I was 16, throwing my food down and crying to mum to let me go veg.

Hey there. I had a lot of trouble with my parents regarding this as well, especially with veganism.
I researched nutrition, learned how to cook some super healthy, super tasty veg recipes and sat my parents down to talk to them in as calm and mature a manner as I could (parents LOVE it when kids sit them down and talk to them like that. It makes them feel you're rational, level headed and grown up enough for your points to be valid). It takes a bit of persuasion, and a willingness to put in the effort; start cooking your own dinner at night, offer to go food shopping with them and use that to influence their purchases, et cetera.

happy It takes persistence so stay strong and good luck.
