It's so great to hear everyone has at least one parent that is okay with everything! And my mum is no exception happy

My mum is realllllllllllllllllllllly great about it all. As soon as I made the change she had pages and pages of research for what I could and should eat. She won't buy poultry, pork and eggs anymore and the other day, after going out to dinner, informed me she chose the vegetarian option. She also tells me how she doesn't like the smell of meat anymore at all. Just fish down and she's vegetarian! I see great things.... only a matter of a time before she forms her own ALF cell jk jk tongue

Not sure how my dad would react if he knew. but -- at least the last time I saw him -- he was one of those rugby-playing, racist joke-cracking, biltong-eating, high blood pressure-reading, mercedes benz-driving red blooded South African males. Probably safe to say he wouldn't be too happy. wink

Well, for the most of it, mine aren't too bad. Mum is really good and always buys me little 'vegan treats' xD Dad keeps going on saying that I need animal products to survive and he doesn't see anything wrong with leather etc and thinks I should wear leather, fur, wool etc. And he is usually ok with me being vegan, but he often chucks a big spaz and tells me that he is gonna force me to eat dairy (but he never follows through, thank god). And my mum loves fur and has so much god damn fur and leather that it makes me so angry and sad, that she supports such an industry. But when they're tired in particular, they get cranky at me D= Also, sorry for the stupid question, but why do people write vegan as 'veg*n'? I've been trying to figure it out but have been unsuccessful =/

It's just a short hand way of writing vegan/vegetarain..

Veg*n leaves the middle of the word ambiguous so you can insert whatever one fits you happy
OHHHH, right. That makes a lot of sense now! Thank-you very much for that ^^

Mine accept it, (but im 23 so you'd want to bloody hope so tongue ), however I have to constantly sit through the "Are you getting everything you need in your diet? You don't look so good!" talks. But Im happy they respect my decision which is the main thing ecstatic

God, you have no idea how much I get that from my parents too. I had really bad depression last year (it was caused after my best friend died, being at a horrible school, being bullied terribly, stress etc) and my parents were like "It's because your vegan. Those things have got nothing to do with it". I've never been happier since I became a vegan.

My parents and family have been wonderful. I turned vegetarian at age three and I was very determined at such a young age that there was nothing mum could do to change my mind. She spent years and years researching and visiting dieticians and nutritionists to ensure she was still providing me with all the nutrients and vitamins I needed. She could have easily refused to accept my diet but I'm so thankful that she didn't. I took the next step to veganism a few years back now and mum still checks in to make sure I'm eating a balanced vegan diet and looking after myself. She herself has recently stopped eating red meat... and I have the feeling she's on the way to ruling out more and more animal products.
I admit, though, it is much easier to be a vegan (if you're the only vegan in the family) when you've moved out of home and can cook your own meals. The rest of my family and friends have been wonderful too (for the most part. Some still insist on ribbing me about it, in a loving way I'm sure :p). If I'm invited to dinner, they'll always ring me to check ingredients on products etc, which is a thoughtful gesture.

My parents were pretty much 100% OK with me being vegetarian from the start...but they're not keen on the vegan thing because "It's already difficult to cater for me already." Fair enough, I'll just learn how to cook happy Then that's not an issue anymore.
Whenever the family has a vegetarian dinner (because of me, sometimes the whole family has vegetarian, because it's easier to cook just one meal), my little brother still complains. I think Mum's starting to turn - she usually has "April food" with me instead of the meat Dad and brother are having. Although she says that she won't give up chicken. I'll change that wink

my parents are very supportive when my mother visits she likes to do all the cooking because at her place she has a fussy eater for a partner so has to cook similar foods, and likes that here she gets to try things she would never of tried otherwise.
my dad is also supportive buying us a massive box of fresh veggies from his local veg shop.
he became more supportive of it through my pregnancy seeing how healthy i actually was.
and when we go to visit his he makes sure he buys vegan goodies for us to enjoy he is very cute like that if he is unsure he will ring and ask.

its a big step for my family to be this supportive as they are all big meat eaters, smokers and drinkers, and my family are very well known for our stubbornness.
so even if they were not supportive they would no they couldn't change my mind.

I dont know if I agree with writing things this way as it assumes that vegetarian and vegan mean the same thing and confuses people who dont know much about these ways of life...
