I agree once again with Karen and have tried to address this with the RSPCA. In primary school, we got rangers coming in and telling us to respect snakes etc. However, nothing was said about dogs, birds or any other animal as such. In this neighbourhood, we have had a few cases of kids beating up dogs, killing birds and (the worst cases) hanging dogs with a leash and killing cats with crackers.
During this time, I was basically in tears, unfuriated because kids would brag about such horrible things showing how "cool" and "tough" they truely are.
I wrote to teh RSPCA asking why they haven't had seminars in primary schools showing kids how to respect animals to stop this behaviour. The likely hood of someone hurting an animal becoming a murderer or abuser is high in Australia, but most kids aren't taught with this respect.
I feel the reason for this is because parents teach kids that pets aren't good. EXAMPLE how many people out there abslutely hate cats!!. With these negative teachings, they then go on to show absolutely no respect, animals are seen as "savage" and disgusting creatures.
Haven't gotten a response back from the RSPCA about these seminars...after five years of waiting..but Im still hoping =D
I love Magpies! The way the waddle/run along instead of flying. They are really nice birds if they know you.
There was a family of birds out the back of a place I worked at in Bris. They would sit on the back of our chairs at lunch (our table was out under their tree) and got to the point we could feed them (yes I know naughty!). They soon became parents and never swooped as they knew we weren't going to hurt them. The parents trusted us so much that once their chicks were ready to fly and such they would bring them to the table. They are truly misunderstood.
I also love the calls they make.
As a kid I used to have mirrors on my bike so I could see if any were coming. I used to get swooped a bit, but eventually they got over it - maybe realised I was no threat.
If people just understood birds, thought about the reasons they are so protective, we would have so many more experiences as stated above.
This just shows an example on how poor humans understand animals, its so crap =(
Plovers were nesting in a front yard just down the street, and one day, the babies hatched and started running around all over the place. My family went outside to have a look (and i took some photos), but when we got a bit closer, the babies all bobbed down and disappeared in the grass because they were scared. So we stood very still and waited, and then they all popped up and started running around again. It was really cute.
Not long after this (this happened about 2 years ago), my brother saw our neighbour bash a plover nearly to death with a golf club. Our neighbour had been playing golf when it swooped him, and so he picked up a club, and started swinging it around in the air. He knocked it out of the sky and kept bashing it on the ground, with his friends watching, and laughing as he did it. Then he threw it off the green and kept playing. My mum and I went to see if we could find its nest, and discovered that the poor plover wasn't dead yet. Dad turned up and was going to put it out of its misery, but it freaked out when it saw him and he couldn't do it. So we wrapped it up in a towel, and it died as we passed our neighbour's house. Dad gave him the body and said that he would have to explain what he dd to his kids.
I used to go to school with his kids, and the next day of course their version of the story was completely different to what happened - they were saying that he swung once and hit it by accident, then "tried to put it out of its misery". I tried to tell them that that wasn't what happened, but they didn't believe me.
Further proof that my old neighbour is a tool.
We called the RSPCA the next day, but they couldn't do anything because we didn't have the body.
I think I may have already posted this story somewhere on the forum...sorry if I have.
Thats disgusting. Err. See this is what I dislike about human nature, we attack straight away- either verbally or physically and yes I will admit I attack too, if I feel frustrated my words will become harsh. However, wtf, men don't (well most) hit women or kids because their smaller and weaker- immorally this is wrong (now Im not saying this is the only reason men don't hit but its for my line of arguement) so why do we hit animals?!
It is the same as hitting a child, beating it to death- if a child comes up to us and starts asking 10000000 questions, we dont hit it just because we're annoyed so why do people fricken find it acceptable to hit animals when they're annoyed.
That man and his friends have psychological issues >___<
Man this annoys me
;rant rant rant rant rant;
I just have to add that when I walk with my dog to the park in magpie season, it is hilarious because they ONLY swoop him, not me.
They don't hurt him at all (the ruffle his fur) but they annoy him and he can't get them because they fly away. So it's me and him running down the street with me laughing my head off. Good times.
There used to be a pair of magpies at this park I walked my dogs and I think that they lliked to taunt Missy lol. They would fly up behind her, land and walk around, make sure she noticed them and then fly away once she started to chase them. Then repeat. It was funny to watch.
