Hi there I have been wondering about the clear and proper interpretation of the Bible in regards to eating meat and so forth. It was made clear to me that in the Bible it says in one part about I think it was a prophet or something that had a dream where God said all food (including animals) should be eaten as it is all "Clean" and that it is not good to reject what God wills for food. Though there is a part of me that is really confused here, Im a Christian but I also keep being drawn back to a vegetarian lifestyle due to what I see on the net. From what I see, for instance, the film earthlings to me it seems like God wouldnt want that evil stuff going on. Yet Christians say that its fine to eat meat as it says so in the Bible. Can anyone here with obviously more experience in the Bible than me tell me just exactly what am I supposed to think. I dont believe Im a mindless zombie that cant think for myself, but its so hard to fathom that God would accept what goes on in the world in regards to the treatment of animals. Please help.

I'm not entirely sure either. I think god gives permission to eat animals after the flood as there is no vegetation (but that also makes you wonder.. how are the animals going to eat).

And something i hear that sometimes gets used re Pro meat argument is the whole jesus - fish/bread thing feeding thousands.

I think regardless of anything it might say pro-meat eating in the bible, the food industry is no longer a humble local thing where people are aware of where the food comes from, people don't know who they're eating like a hundred or more years ago when people had farms or butchers with carcasses hanging in the window

pretty sure god wouldn't approve of many of the ways animals are held today for food production.

I see eating animals more of an abomination... we have the resources to eat without causing gods beautiful creatures to die - but everyone still carries on eating them just to satisfy their own wants.

I think it mentioned something about Gluttony in the commandments. Also "shall not kill" not sure if there's a terms and conditions section to the bible that explains it excludes animals...

Christians who eat meat are hypocrites. Why? Here:

Genesis 1:29-30 "And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb yielding seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for food: and to every beast of the earth, and to every bird of the heavens, and to everything that creepeth upon the earth, wherein there is life, [I have given] every green herb for food: and it was so."

Numbers 11:4-34 The people in the desert are tired of manna, and so ask for meat.  Quails are sent, but as soon as they eat the quails, they are struck with a deadly plague.

Daniel 1:3-16        Daniel and his friends refuse to eat from the king's table which has meat on it, but eat vegetables instead.  After ten days they are found to be healthier than those who eat at the king's table.

But the bible isn't consistent, as it also has Compassion To Animal statements, Animals Are Like (or superior to) Human statements, Animal Sacrifices, and Statements that are non supportive of Vegetarian.
What does that tell you wink

My grandmother knew a few church men who would not eat meat because it was unholy- it was not the source God gave to us. I believe around Easter that some Christians fast from dairy and meat for the whole weekend, not just Friday and then some others have just abolished meat and dairy from their lives.

I put this up a while back but it is believed Adam was a vegetarian until the great flood, after that disaster God allowed him to eat meat as it was the only resource. Im not Christian but to me I interpret that as we should be vegetarian unless there is a huge disaster such as that. Though, as stated above if there's no plants then how are there animals? Atleast the moral is there tongue

Very good question.

The problem is, I don't think there is one way to interpret the bible, or any other text for that matter, unless the author verifies and says, "Yep, THIS is what I meant."

Like, in school, you study texts where the author has died years and years ago. They ask you to interpret it and the way one person reads it, may not be the same as another person, but that doesn't means either of you are right or wrong.

The way you read it, is the way you interpret it and just stick to what you believe happy

On a similar note, I really hate it when meat eaters quote the bible, justifying why they eat meat, when they aren't religious at all...

My grandfather was a seventh day adventist, he was extremely religious. He went to Church every Saturday (yes, Saturday, not Sunday), read the bible, and did all that religiousy stuff. And because of his religion he was vegan... So according to him, the Bible does not allow people to eat any animal derived food.

I cant say ive heard that. I dont know the entire bible off by heart obviously. Im religious and have always been a massive fan of studying all religions. Muslims, jews, christian, catholic, even scientology.. It's all hugely interesting to me, and id love to go to uni for religious studies.. But i am the first to say, that the bible is full of contradictions.. "the lord forgives all"
... "all that sin will be burned"
it just sort of has 2 extremes in one book, and i admit that. i dont live by the bible, i believe in god. but the bible isnt my life
