Mushrooms are one of the most appropriate vegies to have in terms of protein- especially when you are just coming off need, you need to maintain a balance. However, it depends on the person, I can easily go without mushrooms and still have a good protein balance, your daily intake of nutrients depends on your body.
It is good for protein, though not necessarily the best for everyone.

Mushrooms can also be bad if you have too many too often as they become acidic in your stomach.
I know personally that I cannot eat many mushrooms before my body rejects them completely.
But they do make a good meat substitute because of their protein as well as their texture.
I prefer to eat TVP and lots of vegies to get my proteins.

It's all a matter of working out what works for you though.

Shroooms!!!! YUM!! But like all good things in moderation, there are plenty of Veg*n protein sources, Tofu, Tempeh, TVP, it can't be stressed enough, a balanced diet.

To call anything the "meat" of Veg*ns keeps us trapped in an omni mindset, we should really try to change our language  to reflect our values.

I couldn't agree more with your last sentence. It's just one of the reasons I tend to not eat fake 'meat' as well. That and I don't like the taste or texture. But each to their own happy

Steer clear from the word meat, but use powerlol Iron Power for vegeterians. I live on them so thats probs why I have high protein level.
the woird meat originally referred to anything that had a fleshy texture and was used to described vegetable flesh, fruit flesh, etc.

Why not take the word back and use it how it's meant to be used?
I eat vegetable meat every day (lol it sounds weird..)

If you evaluate food on the basis of protein per calorie you will find that mushrooms have the highest protein of anything, I believe

Of course, that's raw mushrooms, as soon as you fry them you'll find the protein: calorie ratio drops quite a bit!

But potein levels aren't so important, you have to evaluate things like protein efficiency ratio (ratio of amino acid levels compared to muscle tissue). However really it's not that important, if one lives on a wide range of healthy vegan food (not a junk food vegan diet) and you get enough calories, then you will automatically get enough protein.

Also remember: the human digestive system can only absord between 20-30g of protein in a 3 hour period. If you eat more than 30g of protein in a meal, it will just get stored as fat, or be excreted. This is why many body builders go for 6 very small meals a day.
