white people can't say nigga, black people can say it allll they like.. i always get the "they can say it, and say it to eachother, but we can't say it or use it in any way"
The n-word was created to degrade and oppress. It's easy to sit in a place of privilege and think "boohoo they get to say it why can't I!" but with any knowledge of the history of the word you'd think it would turn you off completely? It's not necessary, surely it takes nothing from a person to not use a word?
In regards to the word 'retard': When is it ever used positively?
"Oh my gosh that's so retarded"
"She is such a retard"
Do we really need to put up our shields and fight for the right to use words that can very easily oppress another person when there's such an abundance of other words we could use?
allot of white kids are calling each other nigga now, kind of like Bro.
I'm not sure if thats a good thing, but wouldnt it be good for the word to loose all it's ugly history? Or should it keep in it's pure discriminatory meaning to remind us how blacks were treated?
I dont know but it's probably more of an American issue.
im not using any word thats offensive to anyone. im asking questions as to what is acceptable and whats not. cos i havnt a clue, everything gets changed- some people are sensative, some arnt..
Please tell me one person with a mental/learning disability that would enjoy being called a retard.
just cos its got history doesn't mean it has to still mean something bad..
being a nazi is obviously terrible, but people think it's okay to wear a nazi uniform for halloween or at dress up parties..
and do unto others? i dont care if someone calls me a retard :S
and i dont care if someone calls me anything- im not going to get over sensative and cry about it
I guess I've just never found it too difficult to be considerate.
If I say something that offends somebody I apologise and endeavour not to say it again.
Maybe I'm biased because my brother has Down's Syndrome but the word 'retard' has alway been a bit of a dick thing to me.

my cousin has a learning disability, and he's constantly laughing at himself about it..
i dont deny it's a bad thing, I WAS JUST ASKING IF IT WAS ACCEPTABLE IN THIS DAY AND AGE.

Definitely the latter. Imagine if all that happened in the holocaust was just forgotten... it would e even more of a waste. we learn very valuable lessons from our history.
And going off this thread, racism is clearly not an issue confined to America.

you refrain from saying retard, but dick is okay?
Yeah Sarah, you might offend people with penises.
'My boyfriend has a penis and he laughs about it all the time. I'M ALLOWED TO HAVE AN OPINION.'
