If I were to say "I've had a lot of mixed impressions from 'white' people." you'd probably think it was a very strange comment. Of course I'd have mixed impressions, 'white' people come in all shapes, sizes and personalities. I wouldn't dream of trying to fit them all into one box. Why would it be any different with any other ethnicity?
I agree with you. While I don't agree with what rottweiler said, in a way I do think I know what she's trying to say (not from the 'mixed' impressions comment, but by her general line of argument)? I guess unfortunately I've only had mostly bad experiences with the aboriginal community (being broken into several times, all my things stolen, being threatened, spat on, being thrown goon bags and beer bottles when I walked past the park next to my house to get home, etc). BUT I recognise that's only because I lived in an area of Sydney (Redfern) largely populated by disadvantaged Aboriginals from broken homes ("The Block" was only a 10 min walk away). I do know it's not representative of the whole ethnicity, but it's all I've personally seen of it. That certainly doesn't make me stereotype a while ethnicity though.
I grew up in Fitzroy, Years ago when it wasn't as nice as it is now.
There were lots of homeless people and I never thought twice about them, Not because I didn't care, I just thought it was '' normal '' because I grew up seeing them.
Nonna took us for a walk down brunswick St just about every night, So I seen them alot.
It wasn't untill I was about 14 or 15 that I started to look atthem differently, Maybe because I understood more?? I don't know.
Now when I see a homeless person, It breaks my heart, No one really wants to worry where they'll get their next meal from or if they'll have shelter for the night.
Yes, Alot of these people have drug, alcohol or mental problems but that doensn't make them any less worthy of help or sympathy. They are people too.
And it isn't as easy as '' go find help, there is heaps out there'' Someone very close to me became '' homeless '' with a llittle 3 y.o.. She was lucky enough that I was able to offer her a room for a few months, I tried to help her find a home, I rang everywhere, All the agencies I could find. It was so hard, I know because I was in the middle of it. So it's not as easy as some people think.
I am very lucky that I have a great family that would help me in any way that I need, Some people are not so lucky.
My only qualms on what you said it.. Sympathy isn't going to change their lives.. Us going home and feeling bad about it isn't going to keep them from being hungry.. People often don't want sympathy or people to feel bad for them..
Well people with a heart will feel sorry for others in need!!! Animals and people. Do you think feeling sorry for animals is going to change things???
Seriously, Sometimes you need to think about what you say!
I have friends who are semi-homeless and do drugs so i would appreciate it if you didn't stereotype them in the way you are now. They are some of the nicest people I have ever met, they just suffer from addiction.
All i'm saying is to stay away from druggies on meth because they can get violent when their mental state is altered. This is just common sense. If you want to teach your children that junkies are really friendly that's your choice but I'd rather be safe than sorry.

You do realise that if you think PC is stupid doing things because they're not PC is equally stupid because political correctness is still determining your behaviour right?
I'd rather do neither.
But I think there is a big difference between breaking a rule because it is stupid and following a rule because you are stupid

I think we should get more pedantic about our language and look for discrimination hidden deep within our dialect so that we can change it to neutral definitions whilst condemning those who arent as progressive as we are. I think that's what will make the world a better place

I dont think my last statement was at all offensive :S I was just saying.. Feeling sorry for them doesn't change their state, and help them at all.. People dont like being felt sorry for.. If you had an illness, or were homeless, how would you feel constantly having people say " awww im so sorry, it must be awful " eventually your going to be like -_- " that doesnt help me, keep your pity"
Well it's only natural most of the time that people's sympathy will turn to action? Or at least the more people that empathise with a certain group the more likely it is that some of them will do something practical to help that group.

I agree. It's how I ended up on Unleashed, became Vegan and a member of Animal Liberation Queensland!

i agree with staying away from people on meth, but not ALL druggies are bad, and you don't have to respond in such a rude manner.
