Hi Gracie,
I was diagnosed with low iron last week.  Truth i felt like i would die, i had no idea what was wrong with me.  When i found out it was low iron, those i know who still see animals as a piece of meat naturally assumed i required a piece of cow.  I turned to the pil bottle of supplements and would love some tips on increasing my iron levels without this, i much prefer natural therapy. BTW if i died because of low iron (felt that way ha!ha!) then it would have been for a damn good cause.

ALL MY LOVE...Thandi-Claire

It's also worth noting that low iron is very common amongst women, and practically equally in meat eaters as vegetarians. 6 of my friends have been diagnosed with anemia. All 6 eat meat on a regular basis.

Sorry can i just add, that all of those foods mentioned in the article are a regular part of my diet. In fact Dahl is almaost a daily meal because i love lentils so don't rely on these foods and ensure you get your levels checked.

To get the 77% of iron, I had a smoothie with 3 bananas, 3 dates, 1.5 cups of juiced oranges and 1 nectarine and I snacked on 120g of blueberries (one punnet), 73g of pistachios and an apple =) Just shows how easy it is to get iron =)

As for the low iron, heres a link you might like to look at: http://www.vrg.org/nutrition/iron.htm it has a list of foods that are high in iron.

The pistachios I had (according to the cronometer) made up 36% of that 77% of iron, so maybe snack on a handful of pistachios and some apricots every now and then. I usually add somes greens to my smoothies too which really help with iron, ie:

About 70g of bok choy, celery, endive and rocket (arugula, roquette, not sure what the right name is), 2 bananas, 3 dates and one cup of coconut water gave me around 50% of my iron requirments, it definitly wasnt the best tasting smoothie, but it was stll enjoyable =P

I used to have a problem with low iron when I was younger, as well as my sister and she eats meat everyday! So it's not because of your vegan diet, it's just our silly female bodies, i'm not sure about my sister but my last blood test showed that my iron levels were perfect =) Unlike 5 or 6 years ago when I was told I needed suppliments, which I never took, naughty me, I HATE pills lol.

This link is good too! It tells you how to increase your iron absorption and what foods can interefere with the iron absorption: http://www.ivillage.com/iron-absorption/6-n-145851

It says to get the most out of your iron supplements they are best taken on an empty stomich with a glass of orange juice =)

The cronometer has been awesome, I wouldn't of though I could get so much iron just from my morning smoothies !

Sorry, that's 70g EACH of the celery, rocket, endive and bok choy, not 70g all together.

It is just amazing how this world has been so successful in brain washing us for so long that the only way to get iron is through meat.
When you do a little research you see that there are so many ways to get iron without harming our beautiful animal friends.

Oh, and we LOVE!!! Dahl too...OMG! It is the best!
Though we have now just gotten into cous cous and polenta - YUM!
