Wearing white jumpsuits and sheep masks and holding a banner that reads, "Try to Relate to Our Fate Ban Mulesing and Live Exports", members of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) Australia will gather in Federation Square on Saturday to demand an end to the Australian wool industry's atrocities against merino sheep.

"Humane options to mulesing are used by many farmers, but many other farms seem determined to mutilate lambs instead of getting with the times", says PETA Director of Campaigns Jason Baker. "And the only way to prevent the suffering and deaths of these gentle animals at sea is to end live exports."

In mulesing, large chunks of skin and flesh are cut from lambs' backsides in a crude attempt to prevent maggot infestation. This cruel practice continues even though more humane methods exist. In live export, sheep are packed onto multi-tiered, open-decked ships for slaughter. Tens of thousands die each year during the long voyages across thousands of kilometres of sea in temperatures that regularly reach more than 40 degrees Celsius. Many die from starvation or heat exhaustion or are trampled by other terrified sheep.

PETA and its affiliates have persuaded dozens of clothing designers and retailers including Abercrombie & Fitch, H&M, Limited Brands, Liz Claiborne, Gap Inc and Timberland to stop sourcing mulesed wool.
